Question about Annual Check-Ups
This is in follow up to the school nurse post...
Does your Pediatrician do an eye test and a hearing test at your child's annual physical?
Emily is 6 and our pediatrician has never done this.
Just wondering what is the norm here...

Re: Question about Annual Check-Ups
My pediatrician started the eye testing and hearing testing at my DS's annual physical when he turned 4 (and it was done again when he turned 5).

Re: Question about Annual Check-Ups
I responded in the other post but didn't realize you did a spin off
DD always has her hearing and vision checked at her annual. Her vision screenings stopped a few years back because she had to get glasses, so now I just have her go to the eye Dr for that.
DS is only 14 months, but they did a hearing and vision screening on him at 8 months. Which actually prompted me to take him to an eye Dr. Turns out he is slightly nearsighted in his left eye!!

Re: Question about Annual Check-Ups
Yes. Since they were able to identify shapes they've had eye tests. Hearing not as often but it was done at least once that I recall.

Re: Question about Annual Check-Ups
Ok so I guess my pediatrician is a TOTAL slacker? He has definately never ever tested her hearing and vision --- in 6 years of her life!
I know she is getting them in school. She had them a few months back and the nurse thought she wore real glasses and told her to come back the next day with her glasses, and Emily went along with it---meanwhile they are an $8 pair of glasses from claire's that she only likes to wear for "fashion."
So I called and spoke to the nurse about it and they did test her...and she tested fine.
But since the pediatrician clearly isn't doing it, should I make an appt at an eye doc just to get her tested properly?
And should I call and mention it to the pediatrician?

Re: Question about Annual Check-Ups
DS has never had an eye or hearing test by his ped and he is 5! I learnt that they are supposed to do that only after reading some threads on here. We have so many problems with his ped! Luckily, DS has had no major health issues so far. With DD coming soon, I am on the hunt for a good ped. Good Luck with your DD's ped!

Re: Question about Annual Check-Ups
I am pretty sure of it. I dont remember the hearing test though. DD does have an eye issue so I am unsure if they did it bc of this or if its standard procedure. We are up for an annual in a week or two.

Find out what the AAP (Amer. Acad of Peds) recommendations are and then bring it up to your DC's doc.

I think most peds just do a basic eye exam. Ours sent us to an eye doctor when ds#1 had trouble with the basic one.

Re: Question about Annual Check-Ups
My pediatrician never did and it's one of the reasons I switched when my DD was 5. I went out on my wn to specialists because I felt she needed to be checked for both annually.

Re: Question about Annual Check-Ups
Ped does the eye test with the machine starting at 12 months.
At 4, DD got the machine eye test, and also had to read the traditional eye test chart.
Hearing is done every well visit also.

Re: Question about Annual Check-Ups
Yes, both the hearing and eye test is done at their annual visits.
I also know the school nurse tests them every year too. Last year, DS came home with a note saying he needed to be tested further with his eyes since he was only reading 20/40. I took him to a pediatric eye specialist and we will now take him every year.
