why do people hold the top of the treadmill?
I see this often, with men and women. Instead of holding the bars on the side or the bar on the front, I see them holding the top of the treadmill. Is there a reason for this?

Re: why do people hold the top of the treadmill?
I think it's odd that people hold on at all. It actually makes me kind of giggle when people put the incline all the way up and then hold on for dear life.

I do that when on a crazy incline. It's more comfortable to hold on that way.

I think it s sorta silly too. Plus you are actually taking some of the work away, so if they can't do it without holding on, they are better off taking it down a little.

Re: why do people hold the top of the treadmill?
I think people do that when they set the treadmill to a high incline
However, no one should ever really lean over on or slouch on a treadmill, bike, elliptical. It's really bad form.

I agree... Walking on an incline is supposed to simulate walking up a hill.... so holding on would kind of defeat the purpose, wouldn't it?

I hold it on an incline for balance only. I don't use it to support myself though. That's just silly!

Re: why do people hold the top of the treadmill?
I never understand why people hold on at all. It makes the activity easier and defeats the purpose of walking on an incline.

Same here. Treadmill inclines are not the same as an outdoor incline. The treadmill is at a constant pace. There is no natural slowing or picking up. Sometimes I step wrong or my shoe "catches" and, sometimes, on a high incline I need some balance when speed walking. I don't hold on when running.
I have zipped off the back of a treadmill twice in spectacular fashion at the gym. I got a round of applause once.

Re: why do people hold the top of the treadmill?
I never understood this. Holding on messes up my momentum especially if I'm running. It makes no sense to me either.
There is this one guy who I always see at the gym and he sets the treadmill speed at 8mph. He literally runs for 10 seconds (no exageration) and then proceeds to hold the siderails and lightly pulls himself up off the treadmill so his feet lightly hit the treadmill. So it's almost as if he's barely touching the treadmill. Hope I made sense! It's hard to put it in words. He continues to do this every 10 seconds for the whole 20 min he runs. It makes absolutely no sense. Why would you put the speed up that high if you can't keep up?!?!?!?!

Re: why do people hold the top of the treadmill?
Only when you are on a steep incline is it better that way I guess. I always hold the bars

Re: why do people hold the top of the treadmill?
I find it more comfortable and that I have a better grip. I go on an incline of 15.

Re: why do people hold the top of the treadmill?
I hold it when I walk on an incline. I do short intervals of walking at a fast pace (>4.0) and steep incline (>4) in between running, to keep my heart rate up. I am tall and have very long arms, so if I hold the ones by my stomach, I feel like I am going to fall off backwards. IDK, its just more comfortable at that pace to steady myself my resting my hands on the top.

Re: why do people hold the top of the treadmill?
I do this. I put it on a VERY high incline and hold on, however i hold on as lightly as i can. If i didn't grasp the bar a bit i would fall off.
You are still doing a tremendous amount of work walking at a steep incline even when holding the bar as long as you're holding on enough so that you don't fall. Its a great workout for your behind!
