Special urinary cat food
I've written before how my one cat has crystals and the vet said to change to wet food, clean cat box every single day, try to push the water. Well, we used to give wet in the morning and at night and dry to nibble on throughout the day but not we took the dry out altogether and we bought a water fountain because they weren't touching their water bowl at all. They won't drink out of that either so I started mixing the wet food with water, just any chance to get water.
Well, she is still leaking urine. I'm at my wits end. I know she can't help it and I am trying everything I can to help her but my house smells like cat pee and it's everywhere. I am trying to put blankets down etc but she lays everywhere, it's like I put a blanket down and she picks a new spot, but a blanket down, moves spots. Pee spots everywhere. I can't deal anymore.
I heard about this prescription food to get them to drink more water. Does it work? Is it expensive? Do I have any other options with these crystals?

Re: Special urinary cat food
I had adopted my cat several years ago after he had surgery to fix a blockage. Since I've had him, he's always been on special food.
My vet recommended the Prescription Hill Science Diet C/D; I usually get it from the vet's office. They also recommend that I limit the amount of treats that he gets.
A few years ago, he was urinating in my closet and in my living room. He didn't have crystals or was blocked so we got him a second litter box. Since we did that, he hasn't had any problems urinating where he's not supposed to.
Have you taken the cat back to the vet? If you need a recommendation for a new vet, please let me know. A friend of mine works for a good vet out in Suffolk County.
Prayers that your kitty gets better soon!

Re: Special urinary cat food
First of all, Im so sorry. One of my cats has had crystals twice and its very hard to deal with, I know.
But I am a little confused...when you say leaking urine...its just coming out? Because if thats the situatuion, I never experienced that sympton. Or do you mean, he is still peeing all over the place? Also, does is have blood in it or is it pink?
From what I have experienced and been told if it continues, it can be very dangerous for it to continue too long because its the more chance they get get a blockage which is not good at all.
BUT, if the vet says no more crystals are present and if the urine doesnt have any blood in it, it could be that the cat is scared to use the litter box. One of the reasons why the go outside of the litter box when they have crystals is because when the got the crystal and went in the litter box, they experienced pain so now, they associate it with pain and go other places. Maybe and i hope your baby is okay and is just remembering what it felt like the last time they went into the litter box...so you might have to kind of train them again for a few days...when they go someplace else, put their face into the smell and then place them in the litter box.
About drinking more water, we eliminated dry all together like you did and that worked but i also add a little water to the wet food too like you said and mix it up with the gravy so its not too diluted and they still eat it.
Again though, just make sure he's still not sick and this is just behavior that carried on because if he's leaking, that doesnt seem right to be honest....dont want to scare you, just want to be sure kitty is okay!
fm me with any questions and also just from our experience, the first vet when we first had this problem gave us terrible info/advice and basically the reason our cat got them again was because we didnt know any of the info we now have from the more recent vet we went too... our vet now is a cats only vet (there are only 5 or 6 in the whole country) and she was so sweet and caring and also reasonable that i thank God we went to see her..if you want info by any chance, let me know
About the uti cat food, there is dry and wet. the dry is better than the regular dry but i still wont give it to my cats anymore unless its just a few pieces as a treat. after eating this food in regular amounts, one of them got the crystals again. so while im sure it wasnt hurtful, it certainly did not prevent them as opposed to the regular dry. as for the wet, the vet said that the wet works well to breaking down any crystals that begin or are present but the problem is that when crystals break down, they are them small enough to go through the urethra (of a boy) and they can create a blockage which is super dangerous and will need surgery. and yes, it is more expensive than regular food. the dry is around 16-20 a bag. not sure about the wet
