still on hunt for a doggie.

The lab I was interested in seeing was adopted before I got there. I'm glad he was adopted, though. Chat Icon

I've been a few places and spent time with some different dogs. I'm mainly interested in a golden retriever. I just felt they were the most gentle with the kids.

However, I am seeing it's hard to find one to adopt as a pup.

I've thought about it and I prefer to raise it from a pup so the dog and the boys can all grow together.

Just putting the word out there. I check Petfinder.com often. I really don't want to do a breeder (nothing against them, just the cost is high and I prefer to adopt).

Re: still on hunt for a doggie.

You may want to just start visiting your local shelters and seeing if there is a dog that you make a "connection" with.

We have no idea what breed my dog is. We probably never will, because I find it silly to pay $86 to have her DNA tested!

What I do know is that we were going to the shelter for about a month and a half, had put in applications for a few dogs and got turned down because we were far down on the list, before we finally get approved for our dog.

But something clicked when we saw our dog and we were very lucky that we were the first family to apply for her, so we were approved. I have to honestly say that from the minute I saw her, and when we met with her in the visitation room, I knew she was the right dog for us.

Please consider visiting your local shelters often and keeping an open mind about the age of the animal and breed. You may be surprised with what animal clicks with you and your family!

Good Luck to you!

Re: still on hunt for a doggie.

I think it's good that you have a breed in mind that you want to keep with, but I also think you shouldn't limit yourself. Golden Retreivers are certainly gentle dogs that are great with kids but there are TONS of others and not always the ones you would expect- collies, boxers, and beagles are great with kids, too! I'd definitely concern myself more with the dog's personality than with the breed itself. I think too much emphasis is put on the breed (and blame!). It's also good to keep in mind that purebred dogs are much more likely to have medical issues down the line!

Re: still on hunt for a doggie.

First off, good luck in your search. I just wanted to say that I have a Golden and she is the best dog ever. So lovable, easy going and still protective. We got her as a puppy from a breeder and it was so fun to watch her grow. DH and I still laugh about how she used to squeeze under our couches and wonder how she ever hit under there. We got her from a breeder upstate that breeds champion goldens and as much as I am would have loved to adopt I am glad we didn't. I know it's not always the case but I have known a few people that have adopted goldens from shelters, they are usually not pure bred and these people have had nothing but health problems with the dogs. Like I said, not always the case but for us it worked out better since we havent had to spend a ton on vet bills.

GL in your search, FM me if you want the info on the breeder we used. I added a couple pics of Harbor as a pup and now.

It totally sounds like a fake ad to me but then again I am on LIF and can say I have heard everything! I did email these people to get more information since my curiosity is up (and I could likely find a home for the dog rather leave it up to chance in craigslist land to provide it a good "free" home).Chat Icon

Re: still on hunt for a doggie.

Maybe try a golden rescue organization such as this one: http://www.grrcny.org/. Check with the national club too. They might be able to put you on a list or help you further.

Re: still on hunt for a doggie.

Sam.

He looks big but he's only a year. This rescue in CT has a lot of options if you're willing to travel!

External Image

ETA: Sam was rescued by this group from a family who put him up for adoption on craigslist! Do you think I should contact them and bring the other craigslist ad to their attention?

u know, I was open to out-of-state adoptions, but many require an in-home visit and I don't know how that'd work if I was a few states away. anyone know?

Some rescues will send someone from one of their partner rescues or a volunteer closer to your area.
A rescue I was dealing with was going to allow someone from a local shelter to do the home check.
When I suggested it, they were happy and said things would definitely move quicker that way.

Re: still on hunt for a doggie.

I could have posted this myself. We've been on the hunt for a long time. Adoption rescue groups like golden retriever rescue wont adopt to a family with such small children and every pup is gone before it seems the posting is up.

Good luck w. your search - hope its better than mine!

thank u all so much again for all the leads!

I had written an email to that one on Craigslist, as I am in same area. No response.

Will contact the others, too.

I'm not in a rush, which is a good thing, because I feel when the right dog comes along, it will be worth it. Chat Icon

That's a fantastic attitude. I wish more people had that attitude insteading rushing into getting a dog. Chat Icon
