Avalon park in Stony Brook - walking, jogging, biking
Love this park so much. Does anyone else go here? What do you usually do?
I usually go there to walk the dogs, we just go up to the "labyrinth" and then back down.
Today I got my jogging gear on, printed out the trail map and went for an hour and 20 minutes. I didn't want to leave, I was having a lot of fun.
I did the yellow trail first, then still had a bunch of time left so I did the blue trail too. Without realizing it, I did them the "easy" way - clockwise - it is really hilly in parts. I think I'll continue that way until I can build up endurance, or just walk the yellow trail counter-clockwise.
Anyway, here's the map, it's a great park, free, and pretty well maintained.

This park looks nice and its not to far from me. Are the there paved trails or are they dirt? I am looking for a place I can bring a stroller. Thanks!

thanks for sharing! I have been looking for place to run because it gets boring running the same route around my neighborhood!

The stroller will be tough. By the pond, there's a wooden boardwalk but it has steps, and then a gravel path with more steps, and then one paved surface.

My pleasure! I keep thinking about when I'm going to be able to get back there but I need more suitable pants first, or to dress in layers. It's getting a liiiiiiiittle chilly for me.

I've been there with DH. It's very pretty and peaceful. We like to hang out by the water and watch the ducks and then along the trail. We never made it all the way around though.

Re: Avalon park in Stony Brook - walking, jogging, biking
I love this park! I used to run the trails 3 days a week. I was in the best shape of my life. I would park down by the pond to make it longer - plus walking through the park area up past the labyrinth was a great warm-up.
I would rotate the trails. Some days I would do the blue trail with the flower fields (cause just doing the blue trail is kinda short). So, a little more then halfway through the blue trail I would jump over to the flower fields (the flower fields kinda go in a figure 8 so you end up where you started) then I'd finish the blue trail.
Other days I would just run the yellow cause it was long enough.
Maybe once every 2 weeks I'd run the blue twice in a row.
I used to live so close. It's just too far for me to drive there that often now
I've been trying to find something similar around my house but haven't had any luck.

Yup! See where the dotted line is straight across, towards the top? Don't go above that line and you're fine.
But, be warned, there are no garbage cans anywhere at all. Last time we left the poop bag hidden behind a log and when we finished our whole walk, I jogged back to the log, got the poop, and then had to double bag it and put it in our car to take with us.
It actually wasn't bad, because we were prepared with extra bags.

Re: Avalon park in Stony Brook - walking, jogging, biking
I think I'm going to skip it, with all the snow this weekend. The tree roots and rocks usually slow me down, to be safe, but if you can't see them - or the trail - I think that's a good enough reason to keep me home!
Zumba in my living room it is!
