Dog nightmares

I think my dog is having nightmares. For the past few nights he wakes up, cries, runs to our balcony door, barks uncontrolably for 30 seconds , comes back to bed and lays on us. He takes Xanax for anxiety. He is a rescue. He has a large burn on his face so they feel he was abused. Any suggestions of things I can do to help him? I feel so bad.

Thanks

Re: Dog nightmares

I dont have any advice but I want to say how lucky he is to have a forever home. We have a rescue too and the issues we deal with her are tough. I think it takes tme, loves of love, reassurance, and in our case training.

Can i ask a question about the Xanex? I'm at the point that I need to get my pup on meds for various reasons (training and time have only gotten us so far. She has severe anxiety over certain noises, issues with things outside, and new people) How did you approach your vet on this or did your vet reccomend it to you? I hate the idea of "drugging" her or having people judge me for it (no flames to you what so ever because your pup seems to have through too much :( ) but we are at a point where some medication will help her get past some issues and overall make her a happier puppy. TIA

Re: Dog nightmares

My dog has nightmares. He does not wake but cries and twitches in his sleep. He is a rescue and was abused. The nightmares and his overall anxiety have decreased over time. We have him nearly two years now and he is truly a different dog. Our trainer recommended helping to build his confidence with a sport (I chose agility) and it has really made a huge difference.

Rockys behavior had gone in waves for awhile but when it hit July 4th we got to our wits end. DH and I would take turns driving him around to get him to calm down. It got to a point that I had not slept in 3 days and I actually just showed up at the vet. I pleaded with them to help me make him happy again. I felt so horrid but I love him so and I hated that he was just so sad. We tried calmicalm (sp?) and it did not work so we tried the xanax. It was amazing! I felt bad that we had to medicate him but the doctor reminded me that a happy puggle on medicine is better than a sad puggle. We have to go get it at CVS and they give him a bone when we drive up. I was just very honest with the vet. I told her what we tried and what we were capable of doing and what we could not (i.e. we cannot control the noises my downstairs neighbors make, etc). They were very receptive. We ended up getting a second dog which eventualy helped us be able to cut his dose but he still needs it. FM if you have any questions
