Searching for the perfect breed...

Maybe someone has a suggestion. DH grew up with large mutts (shephard mixes) ans me with a shih-tzu mix, so we have specific qualities we are lookng for. Our son is now asking for a dog so we are thinking about adopting one next year. We both love and agree on jack russel terriers and beagles. But i read online they are both major shedders and i don't like that. Do they really shed that much?

Here is what we want:
Medium sized dog to small dog
Smart, can be trained and learn tricks
Good with kids
Hyper, high energy is ok
A dog we can do various activities with: swimming, hiking, running, etc
Low shedding

Eta: portugese water dogs seem to meet our requirements, although not really "the look" we like. Anyone have one?

Julz I love that your reserching on this,, I can suggest Bobby and the Strays.. Go in and see whats avail .. If you see one you think you may want ,, reserch that beed and see if it meets what your needs are,, But I have to say .. Hyper is NeVER good!! LOL.. High energy if that really what you meant ithan just make sure you have the ability to give the dog alot of walks and excercise.. I like the Havanese .. They are so friendly and medium,, Or a golden Doodle.. I dont think they shed,, But they are larger than you may mant but they LOVE LOVE LOVE TO SWIM!!!!!!!

Re: Searching for the perfect breed...

We adopted Charlie from TOH Animal Shelter and I have no idea what breed she is, but she pretty much fills all of your requirements...

She is 16 lbs so she's a small to medium dog.

She can be high energy at times but also knows her tricks and commands and is WONDERFUL with the kids...sweet, gentle, loves them to death.

She loves her walks! She'd take 12 walks a day if I had the time to walk her that much! She loves getting her sniff on around the neighborhood! I know you run, and Charlie loves when I do intervals of running too. It actually motivates me to take her with me.

She doesn't shed at ALL and even my *highly-allergic-to-dogs* husband has no problems with her...it must be the hair vs. fur thing...

Anyway, we don't know her breed. There are pics of her on the thread I started today about the animals in the snow. But I'm sharing this because...sometimes it isn't about finding the perfect breed, but instead finding the perfect dog. We were looking for over a month at the shelter before she "spotted" us and she is just the perfect dog for us. So keep an open mind about shelter dogs and mixed breeds also...you never know! hey Jul,

My cousin has two portugese water dogs, She adores them. Instantly I thought of a labradoodle or something poodle mixed. I hate the looks of poodles but labradoodles resemble wolfhounds to me. If u want hyper and high energy just get ready, its alot with kids. My new lab is a certified nut. If you are adopting too alot of places will not adopt out a large breed hyper dog to kid under 7 or so. I desperately wanted to adopt a newf or St. bernard and could not.
i will ask my cousin about the waterdogs n give Kim the info for u on weds. xoxo\

Chatham Hill Dogs. They are mix of cocker spaniel and flat coat. Also called a "minature retriever". They are so sweet and smart. True family dogs. They love to play and have lots of energy. They are wonderful with kids and other animals.

Re: Searching for the perfect breed...

You described my dog almost perfectly except he is a medium shedder and not hyper at all. Most are actually less energetic than him. They are great with kids, have lots of desire to please you, love hiking and swimming as they were bred to do field work, great cuddlers, and very smart. He is a field spaniel. FM me if you would like more info. It's a truly great breed that is not very well known Yesterday I posted a couple of pics of him playing in the snow if you want to see what he looks like.

Re: Searching for the perfect breed...

I have a PWD!!!! Well, my dad does but she's older now so I did live with her for years. She is the best dog EVER. Honestly, she's brilliant. So good with kids. My dad has a 4 year old step-son, who has been around since he was an infant and Maggie was always an angel with him. PWDs do need a good, strong leader because they can be dominant and stubborn, but if they are trained well and given lots of exercise I honestly think they are the best best dogs!!!!

I too have a Springer. I've grown up with the breed and literally learned how to walk with the help of my first girl! We're on our third Springer now and he's great. He definitely sheds, seasonal though not an every day shepard like. He's great with newborns, infants, toddlers, kids of all ages. Social with people and other dogs too. Needs daily exercise. Loves the car and trips to the beach, park, everywhere. We're also involved with NESSR, a rescue org for Springers.
If you're interested, I think most pure breeds have a rescue organization. I'd check out pet finder and suffolk unleashed.

Re: Searching for the perfect breed...

When I first read this my brain was screaming Border Collie. Maybe someone has more info on that breed for you. I know they are high energy, one of the most intelligent breeds, not too big (compared to shepards) and are great with kids. Not sure about shedding or swimming though.

My JRT sheds a lot but she is a smooth coat. My parents have a wire coat JRT and she doesn't shed much at all, she does get groomed occasionally though.

ETA: They each have totally different personalities but they are both very cuddly and super intelligent. The one bad thing is they are both hunters so they tend to dig in the yard once they smell something. They are really good with my son too.

I was also going to suggest a Springer Spaniel. A friend I used to work with had one. Awesome dog. Very, very smart. Very loyal. LOVED to go on walks, to the park, play, etc. I don't remember my friend complaining about shedding, and I talked to her every day for several years, so if it was an issue, I'm sure she would have brought it up at some point. We talked about our dogs a lot... She had a baby when the dog was a few years old and the dog was great with the baby.

Re: Searching for the perfect breed...

I have (and love) beagles. They're great family dogs, very social and loving and smart. HOWEVER they can never go off-leash because they will follow their noses and not stay with you (it's called the "beagle bolt") so you need to be careful when you take them on family expeditions. They also can be serious beggars which always creates some havoc with small kids around! Mine are always trying to scam food from my DD.

Wheaton terriers may fit your build - non sheddign and good amount of energy- medium size - very friendly and good with kids

Border collies are very smart and love activities - but really need a ton of ecercei both physical and mental - and they shed -

Labradoodle! Fits all your requirements...I have a small English lab which would also be perfect for you, but she sheds like a maniac.
