Poor puppy. I adore Danes -- will be looking for two as soon as we are ready for puppies!

What an irresponsible (not to mention idiotic) breeder. Chat Icon

She's a beautiful girl, and I hope she finds a really great home with the right people to take care of her special needs.

Once again - what an irresponsible, idiotic breeder. Chat Icon

You cannot breed 2 Harlequins. It causes birth defects, as mentioned in the story. It
SHOULD be common knowledge to a breeder.

I was thinking the same thing... Obviously the breeder (though I use that term losely b/c obviously a real breeder wouldn't have done what they did) should have known not to breed the two danes but as a lesser informed individual why is it that the two danes shouldn't have been bread?

NEVERMIND! Question was answered!! Chat Icon

Re: So sad...a perfect example why inexperienced owners should not breed..

To get the Harlequin color, the harlequin dane must be bred to another color type with specific known dominant genes. Harlequin danes carry recessive genes that, if bred to another Harlequin would cause birth defects. The lesser defects being deafness and blindness, the more serious being death before birth.

Whoever did that is a friggin' moron and should be made to pay for that poor puppy's medical expenses and care for life.Chat Icon

So the breeder then abandons the dogs on rescvue organizations..happens all the time...dogs were not going to bring in the $$$...this happens in backyard breeders and reputable breeders.

Re: So sad...a perfect example why inexperienced owners should not breed..

Wow, the second post today that had touched on something that also happens in my breed. Breeding 2 dapple dachshunds carries similar risks to what you describe with the Great Dane and in some cases people don't know that their dachshund carries a dapple gene. I must sound like a crazy dachshund lady but maybe I will prevent someone from going ahead with risky breeding.

That is a beautiful Great Dane. Part of the problem is that people who have gorgeous dogs cannot see the harm in breeding them, but genetics is not just about the mom and dad being pretty!
