Need to register DD with school district...to begin evals for CPSE
How do you choose who/where to have your child evaluated? With EI, I sort of followed the recommendation of my EIOD. Should I have it done by the place where I think I might want her sent for preschool. or the agency that provides her EI services? What are the advantages or disadvantages of each?

Re: Need to register DD with school district...to begin evals for CPSE
we used MS for EI, because that is who my Ped recommended...
for CPSE we went with Little Village because we knew that is where he was supposed to go.
when i had my DD evaluated for EI we used LV because her issues were speech and LV is known for great speech programs.
some schools (which they aren't supposed to) do take into consideration where you get your child evaded and whether or not they will take them.
we found out through some gossip, one of the reason my DS was wait listed before even being screened by his 2 year old (EI school) was because we didn't use them.
if you have a school set on where you want your DC to go, it doesn't hurt to use them for the evils.... a little kick back is always a good thing for the schools

Re: Need to register DD with school district...to begin evals for CPSE
I was told flat out by one school that they gave preference to children they evaluate. I am not going to out them, because I think the person who told me that was sensing my frustration and was truly trying to help me. (It is not the school where he ended up going.)
So my advice, is that if you think she will end up in a center based program, get your evaluations through them.

Our social worker recommended that we get the evaluations done by the school we would like our DS to go to. We hare torn between 2 schools so I think that we'll probably just have the evaluations done by the agency that he gets most of his therapies through because it would be weird to have evals done by a school we don't go too. Do you mind me asking what school you are thinking of?
My DS has made incredible progress so I am torn if we should send him to the reach school or not.

No, I don't mind. I'm considering DDI, Just Kids, Alternatives for Children and UCP. We're at DDI right now, but not sure how they will be for the preschool program (I think their day is shorter than other schools); went to a music group at Alternatives, but felt their EI group was too advanced for DD (I just felt the teacher was unrealistic with what she was going to expect from DD) but am willing to look at their preschool program b/c they are very close to me and would make transportation much easier for me; my friend has her son in UCP and is very happy there (he has the same diagnosis as my DD); and I've heard good things about Just Kids.

We're leaning towards Alternatives (I know we live in the same town), and have a tour booked for next week. If we choose them, I've heard that it works in your favor to have them do the eval., so that's who we'll go with. I've spoken to and visited DDI and was not thrilled, so we won't be considering them.
DS is speech delayed, and Alternatives is an integrated class but does have higher expectations that some of the other ones. He is currently in the music class.

My 1st DS has a speech delay and goes to alternatives (setauket). He has made so many great strides in less then a year. Looked at Just kids and heard mixed reviews. DDI was ok we did a separation class there (toddler talk)....just didn't like there preschool program. Now trying to get 2nd DS for speech also.

Re: Need to register DD with school district...to begin evals for CPSE
All of our evals were done by the home staff before DD entered the preschool program. The schools did not revaluate her until she was getting ready for K.
DD went to alternatives and HATED it. Her teacher was awful, they switched therapists on us multiple times and I always got the run around from the director. She was not in the correct placement - due to them changed what the class was mid year and did not care or listen to concerns. She regressed significatly and they offered no solutions at all. Now I probably should have pulled her out but she has/had huge tranisition problems and moving her wouldn't have helped so late in the year.
On the flip side, I have friends that loved it there and it was recommended by all my EI therapists. I just don't think they knew how to deal with my child.
She is in K now and is doing 1000% better and regained everything she lost and then some.

You need to check with your SD. Mine does they own evals. No agency!
AFTER DS was evaluated for services, the SD told me what they approved DS for.
The SD will send a packet to schools I wanted to consider. ONLY THEN, will the schools you are considereing for placement schedule their own evaluations when they schedule you for an "interview".

Just to the OP, but 3 village does not do their own evals, and you choose the agency. They recommend choosing wherever you are learning towards for preschool.

i heard more bad things about Alternatives than good. Their program LOOKS great as a visitor, but many parents I talked to have pulled their child from there.

Can you tell me more about the bad things? We toured and were very impressed by the facilities, but I know there is so much more to the experience. Where do parents switch when they change from Alternatives?
