The 'new' atkins vs. WW...

Does anyone have any experience with the 'new' atkins program? The whole plan is available for free on their website... Basically, in the induction phase, you can only eat 20 gm of net carbs daily including 6 cups of salad and 2 cups veggies each day, along with proteins and fat... your net carbs increase in the subsequent phases of the plan...

Link to plan

I'm trying to decide between new atkins and WW and could really use some insight...

Thanks!!!

I know you're worried about the amount of work with WW, honestly the atkins diet seems like wayyyy more work! I don't think I would have the patience to figure out what would add up to x amount of carbs.
Then again, I'm a die hard WW'er Chat Icon

I have been doing south beach and its similar to atkins but much simpler , you barely feel like you are on a diet after the first 2 weeks because there is so much that you can have on it and you eat till you are full.

I don't believe in restrictive diets like Atkins.

Weight Watchers promotes a more liveable lifestyle.

Re: The 'new' atkins vs. WW...

I think you need to consider what you generally eat. Personally I could never do atkins b/c of the lack of fruit and veggies one apple has more than 20 grams of carbohydrates.
That being said my pet peeve with WW is that it teaches you to track points but not macronutrients...in the real world foods are made up of protein, carbohydrates and fat not points. Personally I would keep a food diary for a couple of weeks to see what you are eating include as much detail as you can including tracking your macronutrients. Once you have a good idea of your intake I would start to modify what you eat.

Here is the link to the USDA web site...it has all the information you need on macronutrients (and it is FREE):

it's net carbs- not carbs

carbs minus fiber- so you can eat veggies- I do my own version of a low carb diet b/c it makes my life easier as a type 1 diabetic - and I have to count carbs to take insulin

I don't eat fruit...but I eat veggies- mostly green ones and protein- it works for me and my life style since I am on the go alot-

Once again---completely agree with you here!

And as far as carbs/net carbs--the way my nutritionist teaches his clients, is to count all carbs. Even fiber. Veggies are still carbs and still add up. I count all of it.

An apple is still more than 20 grams of carbohydrates:
1 medium apple (3 inches in diameter): 21 grams effective (net) carbohydrate plus 4.5 grams fiber and 95 calories.
I understand what you are saying about veggies but 20 grams of net carbohydrates is not a lot...dairy also has carbohydrates that many people forget about.

I agree with you (and your nutritionist) about counting all carbohydrates but Beth's point is important since she is taking insulin to control her diabetes.

Re: The 'new' atkins vs. WW...

I know I answered you already but I just wanted to add a few things that I forgot to mention in my quick reply:

I know you are looking for a weight loss program and are considering your options. Weight Watchers provide a guideline on how to eat healthier. Everything does have a points plus value. This value is based on protein, carbs, fat and fiber. The purpose is so you don't have to figure out and count these components on your own. However, in learning the plan and the science you end up making the right decisions and learning how to read food labels. Weight Watchers also provides you with Good Health Guidelines to help you understand what your body needs and how much of it.

A HUGE part of Weight Watchers is more than just the diet portion. Weight Watchers teaches you skills and strategies that support weight loss and healthy living. Meetings have a different topic each week that target real life issues and obstacles. You are taught a new skill to live a healthy lifestyle. The plan teaches more than just what to eat. It helps you develop a healthier relationship with food and your body. Honestly, since starting WW I just feel better about myself and healthier overall. I have a better relationship with eating. WW tackles issues such as emotional and binge eating.

When you decide on a program, make sure you keep in mind more than just what you eat to lose weight. Weight Watchers is alot more than just counting points. Most people don't realize this because: 1) They recently changed their program to reflect the new science. and 2) Only members receive ALL materials so unless you join, attend meetings, and read all the literature you don't have a full, accurate picture of the plan.

I would suggest WW if you are someone who wants to do more than just lose the weight. It's the type of program that you can live on and develop new skills to live a healthier lifestyle.

I have tried other diets and eating plans (or whatever you might call them) and for me, Weight Watchers works the best. However, everyone is different and different plans appeal to different people. Look at your lifestyle and your goals for youself. That should help you decide which direction you want to go in!

Also remember you can always sit in on a WW for free! Not sure where you live but I can recommend some great leaders in Nassau County.

GOOD LUCK!

Chat Icon thank you

I'm not perfect- but since I started eating very low carb my sugars are pretty normal- with very little medicine

ironically- when I have looked my best in life- it's when I have eaten a low carb diet

so I try to focus on the positive aspects-

Good for you! My dad is a diabetic and rather than making the dietary changes, he decided to just rely on medication. Saddens me to know that he could have done much better without meds if he would have changed his diet. Good for you for taking care of yourself even though it's a challenge!
