Any good online tutorials for crocheting?

Id like to make some headbands and hats for my new niece, and like to see if you crocheting ladies have any recommendations for some good online tutorials?

Any tips for a newbie starting out? What type of yRn and hook to use?

As far as yarns ... you can go to AC Moore or Michael's or a yarn specialty store and my honest recommendation is just to walk around, feel the yarns, and see what appeals to you. That is how I usually pick out what yarn I am going to use. I look for yarn that just feels great to me and then think about what I can use it for.

Different projects call for different size crochet hooks but I tend to use my G and H hooks a lot...not to big, not to small, just right IMO.

As far as tutorials...I am very bad at following patterns and have only done it once sucessfully. I have more luck with just experimenting and pulling something out if I don't like how it is coming along. I have picked up tricks from other crocheters, and have taken one lone session at the library (signed up for a series of 6 but I am pregnant right now and having weekly exams that alwasy fall on the class day!) and other then that --- if there is something I am stuck on --- I go to youtube and search for it! There are tons of youtube crochet tutorials and so when I needed to learn how to make a heart or to work a certain stich, that is where I headed!

Good Luck to you and post pictures of whatever you make!
