dog with a giant lump in throat or by it

I am jumping ahead but I need opinions, My dog Olaf is 11 years old. he has fatty tumors and has had a few removed. Lately off and on he sounds like he is clearing his throat or ate like a hair ball and then i think he needs water go check if he has some and thats it.
Long story short he is very very hairy. I felt around deeply and there is a large mass by his throat.
I know how this plays out, he has to b sedated to b xrayed-hes old, he might not come out of it.
I can tell them if u have him sedated already chance it and operate, he might not come home.
I can leave him and otherwise once in awhile with clearing his throat hes fine, even eats fast.
If I do that, it will grow bigger and soffocate him and i cannot have another tragic dog death in front of me or my babies.
If they xray him n its cancer or not, would u remove it? What would u do?
Im bringing him at 4

I absolutely hate to tell you this but I feel I must because he could be in pain Chat Icon

My first dog was a Golden Retriever. We went on vacation and came back and the dog boarding place told us he hadn't eaten the whole time we were gone and there was a large-ish lump on the side of his jaw. We took him straight to the vet and it was cancer, and being that large there was nothing they could do and he was in pain from it. Maybe they'll be able to tell without the x-ray but I wouldn't just let it be because he could be in serious pain by this point,

no I appreciate u telling me,

heres my question-hes not in pain and he eats, still tries to steal food and eats bonesa and whatnot. If he is not in pain would u put him down if they do not operate? would u make them operate?

My eyes are watering right now after reading this about Olaf...

Hope for the best that's it's just a lump and not cancer...

Don't go to the vet alone... I know how much Olaf means to you...

It would depend on the diagnosis or the vet's best guess. If there is the potential for serious pain or quick deterioration (like fast growing cancer) than I probably would. BUT that is a VERY personal decision and only you, with the help of your vet, can make it. Good luck!
