How do I postpone a meeting (annual review)

I would like a change in placement. Not thrilled with Boces. I dont feel like my son is being challenged enough. I know the school teacher is going to recommend Boces again. (I know he was excessed and when we added my son last year they needed another teacher and he was brought back - could be nothing, but just saying :)) Everythings been fishy. I decided to hire a parent coach/advocate who I know can get us what we want which is a better placement. She told me to postpone the meeting so we could get ready. I called and they transfered me a few times to a woman who basically said no, but not in those words... Just that is was very hard to get them all together etc. I then called special ed again to see what other placements are offered in the middle school - no response. So the advocate said to write that I want a postponement. That I had a legal right to ONE, but I forgot to ask is there anything specific I need to write/say?

I'm not exactly sure "how" but any request like that you should absolutely put in writing. Our advocate told us that anything said/asked verbally was basically never said/asked/requested if push comes to shove. But, if you request something in writing, and in your letter you ask for a "written response" they legally must respond to you in writing, they cannot ignore you.
So if you want to know what other placements exist, write to your case manager and director (or whoever you deal with) and ask for a list of other placements in writing.

YOU have a RIGHT to change your meeting. I dont know why they told you no. That is insane. What do the BOCES teachers think? I am just playing devils advocate? Do they feel he is in the right placement? I would call over to special ed again and DEMAND that you want to observe the special ed. programs that are in the middle school before you make a decision at your meeting for next year.
Good Luck!!!!! Stick to your guns girl.

Re: How do I postpone a meeting (annual review)

One of the mothers in my DD's class wanted to postpone her meeting also. They had her go to the scheduled meeting and just table the meeting until a later date. I think legally they had to hold it at the date already planned but a parent has the right to table a meeting for a later time. She was in and out in 5 minutes.
