Frozen pasta...metallic taste?

I bought frozen mini cheese ravioli from Iavarone the other day...made them last night just like they told me to (boiling water, a little salt) and they had a terrible metallic taste to them. Yuck.

This happened a couple years back when I bought frozen regular-sized ravioli from an Italian shop, which is why I asked the person behind the counter this time around about the proper way to make them (I mentioned the metallic taste)

What gives? What am I doing wrong? One time I made them in a stainless steel pot; last night was in a nonstick pot.

i have had same experience with frozen raviolis. i have tried different brands, too.

i prefer fresh ones now, which are more $ but worth the fresh taste.

you can get them at Trader Joe's in different flavors. regular cheese, artichoke and cheese, lobster, etc.

Try Seviroli. I eat these regularly (DH works in the IT dept. and is always bringing bags home). As sick of them as I am from eating them so often, they are very good! They're also made locally on LI.

They also make the Kirkland brand in Costco which are actually better than the actual brand.

I've never had an issue with a metallic or frozen taste with them.

Re: Frozen pasta...metallic taste?

Maybe they were freezer burned? I have never experienced that and I eat them often. BTW, I personally would never boil in a nonstick pot....I only use a nonstick surface for something like eggs or pancakes.

Also..are you adding salt to the water? If so, maybe you are using salt with Iodine added and you are tasting that, kwim? I buy salt without Iodine. Not sure it effects the taste but I imagine it might.

Re: Frozen pasta...metallic taste?

Thanks, guys. :)

The salt I used has no iodine, so it can't be that.

Maybe its the pots? But then why would it happen twice in two different types of pots? Hmm.

The pasta wasn't freezerburned, unless it was in the store before I bought it...that's a possibility. I think that's the culprit.

It's weird. I don't have this issue with gnocci or pierogi, which are (basically) the same thing as ravioli.

I'll give fresh ones a shot. Honestly, I never bought them because after that one experience, I didn't want to spend $ on fresh ravioli only to have to dump it.

I might just resign myself to not making ravioli at home anymore and ordering it when we go out. I hate wasting food!

It seems the taste is from being freezer burn.

Thank you! Blech. Won't be buying frozen pasta from Iavarone any more.
