Knee replacment

Im 38 and thinking about having a full knee replacement done in the next two months. Has anyone had one or know of someone that had one, was wondering how they felt after, how long recoup time. I have 2 boys 15 and 10 and right now me and DH are not living together but he said he would move back in for the month i have it done. My worry is everything about the surgery and recovery scares the $hit out of me, but i really cant put it off much longer. thanks any advice would be great..

As a PT i see tons of tkr's, but not our ageChat Icon
my peeps are like 65++

everyone is different. i've had people jump up the day after surgery, walk down the hallway with a walker and want to go home the next day.

others (people with very low tolerance for pain generally) don't want to see me the day after surgery. some surgeons call us in in the RECOVERY ROOM to get people up in a chair. patients are NOT thrilled. but you're so young i'm sure they'll want you moving. a lot depends on the surgeon as well, and their protocols.

Re: Knee replacment

My mom had hers done in July. She couldn't drive for 6 weeks, she waited longer though. She had PT for 4 month and it helped so much!!! She was in the hospital for a few days, then to rehab for a few weeks.

She used Orlin & Cohen (Oceanside office). Highly recommend.

My dad just got this done last year and it is almost 20 years older then you but still walks with a limp, in fact due to this he had to retire from his job because he doesnt have full range of motion to do his job an logner

he couldnt drive for 4-6 weeks, and had to go to pt for months numerous times a week

your def going to need help longer then a month especially with two kids

Re: Knee replacment

My mom just had this done in January. It's been slow, but she is also over 65 and was never in good health and is overweight.

She is up and about (and they started that ASAP!) even if it's been slow go and she uses walker and/or cane.

She is still doing PT almost daily I believe at an outpatient facility.

She still has to have her other knee done because the specialist I don't think will do both at one time.

My mom had double knee replacement. She was in the hospital for a week after each knee and about two weeks in inpatient rehab.

Re: Knee replacment

I want to thank everyone for their feedback. My dr. said I would be in the hospital 3 days then outpatient rehab, P/T twice a week at my house. Im just really worried about everything. It seems really scary from start to finish. Again with my DH not living here scares me (again he said he would move back in for the 4weeks of recoup) It is my right knee and the driving is big concern for me.. thanks again

If having your ex is going to be an issue, I would speak with the doctor or even the social worker ;) at the hospital you are having the surgery down at to see if they can provide you resources for after the procedure.

I don't know anything about your children, but 10 & 15 seems like they may be able to help a bit with light cleaning, laundry, simple meals.

Do you have family nearby?

I live 3 hours from my mother, but my dad and sister helped, and a lot of her friends and people from the church she goes to brought her meals for the first couple of weeks post-surgery.

I also don't know if they make you attend, but she did go to a question & answer seminar I believe that was held at the hospital in advance of the surgery and I am pretty sure they gave her a packet of resources.

Are you on LI? Maybe the ladies here would be willing to deliver you meals or groceries ;).

How far are your doctors from your home? It's not ideal but maybe you could take a cab. You may even be eligible for some kind of transportation, who knows.

I don't want to pry but I think I remember you posting recently about issues with your ex.....I just don't want to see you put in a situation when you are most vulnerable. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
