Personally, I would be more annoyed with the parents of the 2 girls who left the first party to go to the other party without thinking about the fact that some kids would be excluded. I would have chosen one party to attend and that's it.
But what if your child was friends with both of the birthday kids? I would have attended both parties, but I would have advised my child not to say anything to spare feelings.
I still would have chosen one party, but that's my approach. Personally, I don't want to go to more than one birthday party in a day and the fact that I avoid any unpleasantness is a bonus.

Re: So not cool...
Ugggh...can't Kindergarten be simple?! IMO...if you're going to have a party and can't afford to invite the whole class then just invite girls only or boys only. To hand pick this one or that one and leave some kids out is so not cool.
It's happened to us too and it totally stinks. For my DD's 5th birthday we invited the whole class. Not everyone came, but they were invited. I've heard of parties she hasn't been invited to and it breaks my heart.
I just couldn't do it. If it were a money issue, then I would have a family only party at home...and call it a day.

Re: So not cool...
I am actually past it. I was really just upset that day bc it was "raw" watching my dd so upset. In the words of the bday girl to my dd "MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS"...LOL and No I am not kidding. Thats what she told my dd the next day bc I guess my dd asked her why she wasnt invited. I told my dd to leave it alone. She isnt really even upset. i think she is trying to make sense of it in a 5 yr old way.
