Major cake and frosting help needed

I am now wondernig why I thought making DS's first birthday cake was a good idea lol

There will be about 23 people. There will be other desserts, but I am assuming everyone will have cake b/c it is a birthday cake.

1) how many cakes? I was going to do this cake with two 2 layer rounds and 1 8x13 - but that will be too much? I can do this other one with less cake.

2) I need some recipes - I am making my own Funfetti with the Magnolia bakery recipe, but I need an easy chocolate cake recipe. And a chocolate frosting one too - enough to cover all of the cakes. (Doing that instead of making it black). also I think for in between the layers, I want to do a white buttercream? Any recipes? Or would chocolate be better? (I don't liek chocolate cake or chocolate frosting so I was thinking that might be too much choclate to have the cake and all the frosting chocolate?)

Thanks for any help Chat Icon

Chat Icon It always sounds like a good idea at first! Until it's not! Trust me, I've been there!

That does seem like a lot of cake for that number of people. What I would do is not make it a layered cake. I'd just do one layer of cake with frosting on top.

As far as flavors, I always like the chocolate cake recipe on the box of Hershey's Cocoa. It comes out so rich, moist, and tasty. YUM. There's also a recipe for chocolate icing on there that's great, too! Chat Icon

Otherwise, Wilton's vanilla buttercream is a nice simple recipe. It's still sweet but it has that yummy buttery flavor, too.
