IEP Help for CPSE (second year)
So our committee meeting is coming up in a month. Last year the committee was very cooperative. I didn't concern myself with an IEP just how many hours of services they wanted to give me. The IEP was generic and computer generated. It definitely had some appropriate goals, but I would like to have more individualized speech/language goals and definitely better Special Ed goals.
I wanted to call a committee meeting midyear but we had such constant change with SEITs (home based), it never seemed to be the 'right' time.
Did any of you help develop an IEP at your annual meeting ? Or did you do that when the school year started ?

Your best bet is to talk to your DD current providers because they are the ones generating the goals for next school year. They are often required to add them into the IEP themselves via a computer program called IEP direct (almost all districts use this program). They can't add EVERY goal that needs to be addressed. They need to highlight the basic areas of need. The IEP is the minimum that the providers need to address. It is basically a starting point. Also, an IEP should never be generic. It shouldnt say "the student needs to improve socialization with peers" it should also use the students name, his/her specific areas of strengths and interests and his/her areas of need/weaknesses.

I always get the parents' input as to what their feelings are on goals as well as their expectations. The IEP, while computer generated, should never be generic and should ALWAYS be individualized for the student.
Definitely contact the providers, or bring your expectations to the meeting. There's a reason the IEP is in draft form at the meeting. The parents are an important part of the IEP team and should always have a say in goals and objectives.
