A "crappy" situation

So I completed my third half today, the More Half Marathon.

I saw TWO women that had literally pooped their pants and kept running (I had to turn away). I have had some VERY close calls and some dips into the woods (thankfully only in training runs, not races) but I really don't know what I'd do if I really had to go during the race and couldn't hold it. I made a decision today that I would drop out if that happened to me, there will always be another half marathons.

What would you do? I think I might also have a different perspective if it was a full marathon, given I haven't done one yet. But maybe if this was my first half, maybe I wouldn't stop for a bathroom break and just "go"? I was just amazed and wanted to get other's thoughts.

What the??! That's crazy Chat Icon. I've never run in any races so maybe it's not fair for me to answer, but I could NEVER poop my pants and keep running!

Re: A "crappy" situation

When I used to run I always worried the same thing!! I might not stop IF I was a super crazy good runner (as in one of the top finishers) but that's the only condition I can think of. I've seen olympic runners just run to the side and pee right on the course. I could see that. But as a regular old runner? Never.

I've heard of this, usually with the top runners like an AP said. I can't imagine ever doing that! I ran the NYC marathon twice and fortunately never witnessed that. Luckily I've never been in that situation during a race, but I would try to hold it until I could find a bathroom in either a store, or port-a-potty.

Re: A "crappy" situation

I'd like to think I wouldn't be able to continue or that I'd drop out. Last month I ran a half in new Orleans. After flying all the way down there, at like mile 12.5 I started getting terrible stomach pains and I really thought it was the end. I managed to finish but if I was at mile 25 or something of a full, I'd probably try to find a bathroom then finish.

Re: A "crappy" situation

omg. I've run a lot of hm's & one full, and I've never seen a runner with poop on their pants. Luckily I've never had to go #2 during a run either (I've had to pee but I've just held it). I guess if I ever started to feel that way I'd just slow down to a walk & hope the feeling passed, at least until I could get to a bathroom.... I would REALLY try to avoid dropping out of the race. But I could definitely NOT poop my pants & keep running.

This reminds me of when Paula Radcliffe at the London Marathon pulled over to the side of the road in front of spectators, took a poop on the side of the road, and kept running Chat Icon And she still won the marathon!!!! Chat Icon

Re: A "crappy" situation

i remember seeing that on TV as a child. Chat Icon

But now as a runner I can understand... if i was the top 10 women to finish a marathon maybe I would just let go. But where I am now... no way. I would drop out for sure.

Re: A "crappy" situation

I have heard of this before and once witnessed it on tv, but never IRL! I can understand if I was competing to finish first but I honestly don't know if I could ever run with "mud butt" as I have heard it called. Chat Icon

Ahhhh thats exactly what it looked like Chat Icon Ugh, yea I'm in full agreement, you drop out at that point. I am even wondering if they knew they did it (both were women at least in 40s). It was fairly close to the end so maybe they figured they were almost done....anyways, lets just say that it sped me up to get in front of each of them!

Re: A "crappy" situation

Gross! LOL. I have yet to witness that, but i know it happens..

Before the half marathons I've run, i took immodium. Both times no stomach cramping or anything!! And in my training runs, i would feel REALLY sick towards the end...day of the marathons i am fine.

Re: A "crappy" situation

This is why on marathon day I wake up CRAZY early to get everything and anything out of my system. I must sit on the toilet at least 10 times.

It only happened once to me during a HM at 95 degrees. This was when the LI half went on the Wantagh for ~5 miles. There were enough trees for me to hide, while my friend laughed her ass waiting for me!

I have peed by accident in a race or two Chat Icon
