I have donated to them for awhile and liked their Facebook page. Then-
Somehow, I stumbled across this Facebook page-and it's not good info. about The Little Shelter which makes me so sad and confused and mad!

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Banned-From-Little-Shelter-Its-Been-a-Long-Strange-Trip/126277334099589

please check it out, let me know what you think and please share this info to get this spread around!

ETA: if all of this is true. my heart is broken for all of these animals and something must be done

Re: hey my animal lovers: check this Facebook page out about Little Shelter

I donated to LS in 2009 for my wedding. Because of the amount they took me on a personalized tour. It was a random day I showed up and they randomly offered the tour.

I was in the cattery and saw first hand several people cleaning consistantly the entire time, it appeared clean but did smell a bit. They had room for special diet cats, then one room for new cats and finally in the general population there were some cages with cats who would soon be released into the general population. I thought all the cats looked happy and had a great set up, one section was all screen and "in the woods" so they could all look outside. There was a wall of cubby holes and in each cubby was a cushion with a cat or sometimes two in the cubby hole. Apparently since my visit a lot has been done to make it better, but I thought it was great when I was there. Lots of baskets with blankets and several cats snuggled up.

As far as the dogs yes they had smaller quarters but each had a blanket or bed and some had "furniture" which they explained was to get them used to a home. Many were out of their quarters and all together in a pen, some were in another play pen area and some had a doggie door to let them go inside or out into a private pen.

I actually saw Ingrid when I was there, she was sweet, but her ears had been cropped so short I felt bad for her.

I think in a situation like this they are doing the best that they can. Animlas do get sick and sometimes there isn't anything you can do about it. I follow them on fb and it seems they adopt a lot of animals out, HOWEVER...I do know some people that were actually denied (mostly when they were younger in age, early 20's). They are pretty strict.

One friend adopted and they came to her house and interviewed her and her husband and it seemed to be such a rigid process and they were ideal adopters too. So I like they try hard to place an animal with it's forever home.

I don't know much else but I do donate to them and sometimes drop off old bedding.

The one cat Doodle who passed away...I saw him there, he was on the counter when I saw him as well and HUGE! I can't remember his age, but he had been there since he was a kitten and I think was around 14 or so, I remember they said he may live here forever since he had been passed over so many times.

Re: hey my animal lovers: check this Facebook page out about Little Shelter

I adopted a cat from Little Shelter about a year ago and they were wonderful. They were not willing to let the cat come home with me until ALL of my references had been reached and questioned. When I went to pick up the cat, they went through all of the information and care with me....for at least 20 minutes, to be sure that the cat was going to the best possible home.

When we brought the cat to the vet, my vet was SO impressed with the condition of the cat, and the care that he had been given at the shelter.

It's a shelter...they are looking to help animals, and I truly believe they are doing everything they can to make those animals comfortable and well cared for.

There has always been controversy surrounding little shelter and their practices - much like every other shelter. At the end of the day, they are usually doing more good than harm.

I agree. But I guess the question is when does a shelter/animal rescuer start taking on too much? KWIM? Sort of reminds me of the controversy of Angel's Gate in Smithtown. A volunteer made all sorts of accusations about how they were just animal hoarders....etc....I used to send them money too since I was always impressed that they did so much for unwanted animals.

Thanks for reading!
I'm just confused! I'd like to think the shelter is doing the right thing but some of the stories on that banned page are upsetting!
Don't know what to believe :(
If you can, continue to read that banned page- just in case!

As someone above said, all shelters have bad sides. My sister used to work at North Shore Animal League, and she said they would keep their 'star pets' alive much longer than they should be. The pets that you get the mailers on, "Support Fido - he needs kidney transplant" or whatever.

In reality, Fide is never going to get a kidney transplant and was in so much pain that Fido should have been put down as the humane thing. But if they put him down, they can't collect $$$ for his 'kidney transplant'.

Sad.
