Question about correcting tests

I'm a parent of a 1st grader in a NYC G&T class. Just curious from you teachers if this is standard. Unit assessments are given and corrections are to be made at home. The teacher gives 2 days to do this (sent home Monday and due on Weds). This is on top of a few other HW assignments. She ads a little note to all parents to give a general explanation of what the kids were expected to know, and how they did as a class. This time she said they struggled and there were some 3rd grade concepts on there.

So, my DD got a 2- and now has to make all of these corrections at home in 2 evenings (on top of other HW)! Well, now we are down to 1 evening, because she was still doing her other HW at 7pm last night and her hand was hurting.

Just curious why don't teachers go over the tests in class? I remember them doing that, but maybe in older grades. Should I just tell the teacher my DD will need a week (do it over the weekend) to complete this?

first grade teacher here -

If you need more time, I'd certainly send in a note and ask for it. My thinking is I'd rather have my students really understand the concepts than rush through corrections just to be finished on time.

Yes, ask for more time. If it were me I'd be happy to know it's just being done with care.

From a teacher's perspective as to why she assigns this... she may want to encourage more help at home, avoid going over the test with the whole class so as not to waste time if some students did very well, or want some additional support so the kids can "get" this unit and she can move onto the next one. The deadline is probably just to make sure it's done and sooner rather than later (or never).
