Question regarding Glucose Tests

What exactly do they do on the 1 hour and 3 hour tests?

Why does it take so long?

Re: Question regarding Glucose Tests

The reason is to see how your blood levels react over a period of time after drinking the sugary drink. There is nothing actually 'done' during that time. And most importantly, you don't eat or drink anything - even water - during that period.

ETA: They DO take your blood (that's how they determine how your blood reacts). It's just that nothing goes on during the 1 hour. I passed it so I didn't have to take the 3 hour.

Re: Question regarding Glucose Tests

The one hour test, you come in, they give you 5 minutes to drink a little bottle of the glucose drink. Tastes like flat soda-no bubbles. I had the orange, wasn't bad at all.

Then you tell them you finished it, and they wait 1 hour before they call you in, take 1 vile of blood, then you wait for the results.

I believe for the 3 hour (correct me if I am wrong), you get your blood tested first, then drink a glucose drink with a higher miligram in it, then after 1 hour, blood taken, then sit back down, after 2 hours, blood taken again, then sit down and wait, then finally blood taken after 3 hours.

Oh I see, so there is no blood taken or anything like that...interesting.

Sounds nauseating being you can't eat or drink anything but that sugary drink within that amount of time Chat Icon

Thanks for the info!

They do take blood. They take it an hour after you drink the sugery drink. Your levels should be under a certian level. If it happens that your blood glucose is over that certain level they will make you take the 3 hour test. The three hour test there is a baseline blood then drink the sugery drink and then blood levels are take one every hour for 3 hours.

Not at mine. I drank the drink at home and then went into the office for my visit. I guess dofferent offices do it differently.

Re: Question regarding Glucose Tests

I had mine done at the doctors office, but the time went a little faster for me than the norm.

They brought me back, and I had 3 minutes to drink my drink. They handed me my timer, and then sent me to the waiting room. After a short bit, I had my regular appointment with the doctor, and then once that was done, I went back into the waiting room to finish out the hour. They called me in once my timer beeped, and they took my blood (2 vials for me unfortunately), and then I was on my way. Got the results in 2 days that I passed...

I didn't have to. They gave me the drink, then sent me home for the hour. I just had to promise not to eat or drink anything (including water) during the one hour.
