Anyone's DC have asperger's

What were they like at 3 or 4 years old? Did you know then?

Re: Anyone's DC have asperger's

My DS was diagnosed with Asperger's a few months after he turned 4 (he's 5 1/2 now).

He was in preschool, but it was actually a family member who recognized the signs and approached us about their concerns. After we contacted the preschool, they admitted that they had had some concerns, and were going to approach us about it (I'm still angry that they didn't say something sooner).

In hindsight, knowing what I know now, it was very obvious, even when he was 3. Unfortunately, I just wasn't educated enough to realize what his "quirks" meant.

He was (and still is) completely obsessed with animals and dinosaurs. To the point that that's pretty much the only thing he wants to play with or talk about. He loves books, loves to read, but the books have to be about animals or dinosaurs or he's not interested. He prefers non-fiction, factual books, and can tell you every fact about an animal or dinosaur, no matter how obscure.

My DS was reading by the time he was 2 1/2 years old (really reading, not just reciting stuff he had memorized). He seemed to have an almost photographic memory - he remembers everything he hears and reads, and can recite things back months later. He is extremely smart, picks things up very easily, and is above average academically in school.

He also has very poor social skills, which was obvious back when he was 2 or 3 years old, but we attributed it to normal kid behavior (when they play around each other but not with each other). It became much more obvious once he started preschool (right before he turned 4).

He didn't know how to talk to other kids - he didn't know how to have a back-and-forth conversation. He doesn't listen when other people are talking - he talks over them with what he wants to talk about. He finds it hard to play with other kids, because he only wants to play with animals/dinosaurs, and it has to be his way. He has always been more comfortable talking to adults - can carry on a full conversation with an adult, but not with another child.

He needs a lot of structure and boundaries. He doesn't like changes in routine, and will have a complete meltdown if things don't go his way. He wants to follow the rules, and wants everyone else to follow the rules as well, and gets extremely upset if people are doing things not the way he expects.

Looking back, all of these traits were there when he was younger, we just didn't know what we were looking at. I wish I knew more about this then, and could have gotten him evaluated sooner.

Hope this helps, and good luck to you!

I had my DD tested at the Cody Center in Stony Brook last summer. She had just turned 7. She was not diagnosed with it.

From what I was told, they are experts in diagnosing Asperger's.

My DS is a lot like this. He too can read from the same age, and loves animals. He is 3 1/2 but doesn't talk about animals or read about them constantly. Right now he has a diagnosis of PDD-NOS, but I have my suspicions about Asperger's.

My DS has no diagnosis, but he's 5.5 years old, and very similar to what you described- but slightly milder, if that makes sense. He didn't read at an early age, but he does very well academically. He also only likes non-fiction books- dinosaurs and all animals are his thing too. He does best with a schedule and steady expectations. He still starts to go into tantrums, but we've gotten better at stopping them before they get out of control. He does ok socially, but he can be very controlling and want to play his way. If you/kids don't, he just won't play. I have mentioned aspergers to his teacher, but she doesn't see it. How/where did you go to get a diagnosis? I've been feeling like something is slightly off with DS for years. But since he does well in so many other areas, I think maybe it's ring missed.

Right now DS#1 is PDDNOS but they said he's too young and it could turn out to be Aspergers. I would do ANYTHING to make it all go away!!!!!Chat Icon
