Re: teachers aids
For BOCES you need to apply through the central office. The process takes a few months mainly due to the wait for the fingerprint results. Yes, aides must be fingerprinted and background checked.

Re: teachers aids
I think that the aides (not teaching assistants - those are different) in my school district get paid 16000 a year. Its really not worth it!

Actually, (I'm sorry) that's for summer school. Before I had my certification I was an aide during the summer and got $69/day (for a 6.5 hour day). I believe FT aides during the year make around 20k. Not 100% sure on my numbers but its somewhere around there.
Sorry for the wrong info!

I know in my district you need to be certified in anything in order to be a T.A. Good luck!

It varies by district. Technically you might not need much, but with so many teachers out of work many of them are taking TA jobs which is raising the bar for the job.
Like a PP says, many districts are requiring certification if only because they can.
That happened to me. I got certified in December and there weren't any jobs right away, so I became a 1/2 TA 1/2 permanent sub in one of the districts I observed in. The superintendent who interviewed me told me point blank that they were benefiting from the job market by being able to hire overqualified people for all sorts of positions. (His words - true but cold I thought!)
I suggest you contact Personnel in some of the districts that interest you.

Re: teachers aids
I think my district is like $13/hour, but once you get to 5 years, you get longevity and that boosts the salary up
TAs are around 25K ~
