DS is a Feb birthday - so he missed the kindergarten cut-off. He was in a 4 year old preschool class this year. He is in daycare full time - they have a preschool program there.

I talked to the director and she suggested putting DS in their kindergarten class. I said that DS is smart enough to know when he goes to public school the following year he'd be "repeating" kindergarten. She told me that its a different program than public school kindergarten.

I don't want to hold DS back but I don't want him to feel like he has to repeat a class/grade.

My gut says to put him in their kindergarten class - I'd rather push him ahead than hold him back.

I was told they are better off being held back. DD missed the cut-off by ONE DAY. She certainly would have been ready for Kindergarten, but we left her in Pre-K. She did fine this year. I would rather her be the top of the class than the one struggling.

How old is he now? 4? Won't most kids be that age in Pre-K?

I know I must be reading it wrong - because my DD is in 4 year program now (June birthday - but she is one of the youngest) - her class is mostly December through March birthdays - so they are already 5 - with a few who were held back and have fall birthdays. I assume if he was february and 3 years old in a 4 year program that she put her child a year ahead in school if he turned 4 this past February.

Have you considered a transitional Kindergarten class? I know at least one school by me has what they call transitional kindergarten for those parents who have either 1) held their child back but who are say a Sept/Oct/Nov child who is already 5 or 2) just missed the cut off - and are Dec and Jan. I don't think they usually put February kids into them - but I'm sure you could look into it. It is more for the kids who just miss the cut off or who are held back. It is more advanced work but not the regular k curriculum.

How is a Feb birthday missing the cut-off? I think he should be in the 4 year old class!

He actually missed the cut-off by two to three months, so he is perfect for next years class. Daycares do that frequently to keep their kindergarten programs full, becuase many kids will leave them to go to school so they have to fatten it up a bit. I would stick with pre-k cause you run the risk of him being frustrated this year and possibly bored next year....

To be honest, I have NO idea how the director places kids. I was told last year he should be in the 4 year old class. She said he'd be in a different class next year. I think either enrollment shifted or something and she just puts kids where she needs them.

I think DS should be in the class he's in now - he's doing well. But 1/2 of the kids are going to Kindergarten next year and I'm not sure where she is placing the others.

I think we should give him the chance in the preschool kindergarten to get ahead. If we put him in the preschool program again, I think he'll be bored. Either way, I think he'll be bored at some point.

The school used to have a UPK program but this is the last year she is doing it there. I guess I just figured he'd be in UPK.

Re: Missed K cut-off, what class will DC's be in next year?

He was just 4 in February, so PreK in September.

In my district, the Kindergarten cut off is December 1, so a child who JUST turned 4 a few months ago would obviously be in PreK. Why push him SO far ahead? There are kids who turned 5 in December in PreK. Why the rush? IMO, pushing them ahead might backfire as he will be with kids SO much older and able to do more developmentally than a new 4 year old.

4 year olds with February birthdays should be in pre-k. totally confused by your post, but if his current school doesn't offer pre-k, I would go with another program.

I Just read your second post, and am confused how at 3 he was supposed to be in the 4's program. I would just go with another school so he won't be in the same class with the same curriculum 2 years in a row.

He's 4. He should be in pre-k, preschool or the like.

I don't even know if you put him in private school if they would let him be in k.

I'm confused by your second post, you aren't sure where she is placing hte other kids? Shouldn't more kids just move into that class?

I'm confused too--it doesn't seem like he's even close to any traditional cut-off dates. Is he born in 2007 or 2008? If 2007 then he should be going to kindergarten in the fall; if 2008, then pre-k.

Maybe "missed cut-off" wasn't the best description for this senerio but he was in the 4 year old class this year.

Bottom line - he's not changing schools (too much to go thru with my exH and DS has a lot of changes in his life and he's happy there).

So the options are to repeat the 4 year class - maybe with a different teacher but basically the same work or to put him in their version of kindergarten. It is supposedly different enough from school district kindergarten that he shouldn't be bored when he goes to school district kidnergarten but the director also said that if we wanted, he could test out of school kindergarten and go directly to 1st grade.

Since the curriculum are different, I would put him in the private kindergarten program. IMO, repeating the same curriculum is just a recipe for boredom.

As for the following year, I would keep him in public kindergarten, as pushing him ahead to 1st would cause a major age discrepancy between he and the other kids.

I think what she is saying is that 1/2 the kids in her son's current 4 year old class are going to kindergarten in the fall but since he turned 4 in feb, he will not be going to kindergarten until the following year.

I would put him in whatever the next level up at daycare is. It will only help to prepare him for kindergarten. I doubt he will think he is repeating a grade when he gets to kindergarten since it will be a new school, new teachers, new kids, new format, etc. If anything, I would call the kindergarten class at daycare preK so he know the difference.

Where are the rest of his classmates going (the ones not going to kindergarten in the fall). I would put him in that class.

Some of them are going into the daycare kindergarten class, some are going into the other pre-k 4 year class.

I'm leaning towards the kindergarten class at daycare. That's where the director thinks he belongs. I want to talk to the teacher to see what she thinks. I think its better for him to be overprepared then underprepared for school district school.

Now, to tell exH of the plan Chat Icon Chat Icon

I don't think you would be able to have him go directly to first grade while he is still 5, and turning 6 in February. I can't remember the law regarding it, but I think it's something like they have to be 6 if they haven't had any other public schooling or something like that. I would research it.

My DD is a December baby, so she misses the cutoff by a few days. I'm changing centers for the 2012-2013 school year.

If I was in your situation, and changing schools wasn't an option, I would put him in their version of kindergarten.
