leaving dog while on vacation
I think I have posted this before but I will again.
In 4 months DH and I will be going on a 7 day Med. Cruise but we will be away a total of 10 days. We have a great boarding/daycare place that Shamrock will be going to but I cant help that I am starting to get anxious about leaving him for so long. I know he will have a great time during the day playing with the other dogs but since he isnt used to sleeping in a cage anymore I am worried about the night. He is so used to sleeping with us now. What I do like about this place is that they have a webcam that I can check on him during the day and also at night.
IDK- Its like I am having separation anxiety leaving him

Re: leaving dog while on vacation
Honestly, dogs are so flexible. I don't know why "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" is even a saying because it's the most FALSE statement I've ever heard. Dogs are easy to adapt. Lucy was very used to sleeping with us, too, but then she got her... period. Yuck. So obviously, she wasn't allowed to sleep in our bed during those few weeks. She took it upon herself to sleep in her crate with the door open and now that she's allowed again, she won't come to bed! I seriously don't mind since I have so much more room, but it's so funny to see her put herself to bed at night! Basically, what I'm saying is, Shammy will be fiiiiiiiiiiine! This is a vacation for him, too!

Jill I am also afraid that he will be mad at us for leaving and also there are times that I think will he remember us? I know- I know... I'm sure he isnt going to forget us but will he think we are abandoning him. Is this crazy that I am worried about my dogs feelings?
We have brought him a few times to the daycare and honestly he looks like he is having a great time. But we always pick him up at the end of the day. This is nuts-- I am getting myself all worked up over this!

You're a little nuts, but in the best way possible. lol! He will totally remember you! Nothing and I mean nothing compares to "mommy" in a dog's eyes. I just got back from DR for a week and I know my sister just spoiled my dogs, but when I came through the door, it was like pure joy. Just think of all the videos of soldiers who have been at war for weeks, months, years and they come home to the warmest welcome from their dogs! A week is nooooooooooothing! I think it's adorable that you're worried about his feelings, but trust me, he'll be fine. He'll be way too busy with the other dogs and the new people to miss you too much!

Shamrock will be FINE! Especially if he already loves his daycare. We leave my dog at my moms whenever we go on vacation. He has the time of his life and as soon as we walk in the door (a week or so later) he comes running straight for me (hehe then he goes to DH second). Shammie will not forget you nor be mad!!

Re: leaving dog while on vacation
Celia, Shammy will be fine... this is going to be much harder on YOU than it will be on him!
Dogs adapt so easy, and they are very 'in the moment'... so he will have fun - sure he'll miss you.. and that will be most evident when you get home and he is so super excited to see you!!
We just left Sam and Lilah for a week... the toughest part is leaving them, as they see bags packed and get a 'worried' look.... but in the end - they have fun and we got home and they were over the moon to see us...jumping, whining and couldn't get close enough to us.
Shammy will be the same.. he'll have a ton of fun, and when you get home he'll be on you like white on rice because he's so excited you're there. He'll be too excited to be mad!

Definitely way harder on us than it is on them. Just think about how happy he will be to see you when you get back!

Re: leaving dog while on vacation
Darwin used to LOVE getting boarded when we went on vacation! Dogs love new smells, new sights, new "friends". Darwin had a ball smelling all the new animals, having different people petting him, etc. Dogs also have an amazing memory. Much better than humans, especially when it comes to scents. He will never forget you, no matter how long you are away.
Enjoy your vacation, and let him enjoy his!

Re: leaving dog while on vacation
I understand. I almost didn't want to go away b/c I started to panic about my dogs being without me. Big thing is if you trust this place, but yes, I would feel the same esp if he was sleeping alone every night.

Re: leaving dog while on vacation
I am going through the same feelings. We are going away for ten days and one of my best friends will be watching him. She is so much fun and he will have a blast, but I get so sad thinking about him missing us.... Especially me. He want let me out of his sight!

I agree ! I'm dog sitting a friends dog this week and he seems happy. Follows us around, plays with my dog and just acts like he's always lived with us lol
