Are any of you choosing not to do a NT scan

For some reason I though this was not a personal choice until I saw my OB last night. I had not given it much thought. I guess if something was wrong I would like to be prepared. Anyone choose not to do it?

Re: Are any of you choosing not to do a NT scan

I will not be doing it and I didn't to it for my son either. I talked to my obgyn this time around and he said with twins there is even more or a risk of the results not being accurate wether they are negative or positive. My cousin had a big scare due to this test with false positive results. I would not have an amnio or terminate either way. For me personally it just causes anxiety.

Re: Are any of you choosing not to do a NT scan

I seriously considered not doing it. DH and I are still saying we wouldn't get a CVS or an Amnio unless there was a danger to me, so idk......... so confused. I figured I know they're gonna scare the crap out of me either way, so I am just going to go with it if they insist. I will just make it clear that I know the statistics of False positives and that I won't let them push me to do anything I don't feel necessary doing.
I actually called the nurse at the peri today to discuss "why" i had to have this done. What it's for, etc. It's not like I am going to terminate the pregnancy or anything. She basically told me that it's to cover all bases to ensure I'm aware of any risks to me or the babiesbefore their born.

Sounds to me like it's to prevent a lawsuit...Chat Icon Can anyone enlighten me?

I was actually surprised that my ob was very neutral rather then pushing for it. With my son i didnt have it done. Like u mentioned I wouldn't have terminated regardless. I also felt that the 20 week sono was very thoughough and was comfortable with just that. For this pregnancy with twins I thought they would encourage it more but I was wrong. He said that their is even a greater chance of inaccurate results with the blood. Then i spoke to my cousin who had a big down syndrome scare and the test was wrong I want to enjoy this pregnancy and not stress more then I have
to. Wether is is three days of stress until i get great results (that could still be wrong) or an even longer period of stress due to bad results I'm just not cut out for it! I'd feel better just passing on the test and praying knowing that it's in Gods hands test or no test. This is just my personal feeling and definitely talk to your doctors and do what's good for you:)

Re: Are any of you choosing not to do a NT scan

I denied the CVS and amnio early on. Had to sign a waiver too. I chose to do the NT scan. I went back two times because my girl was playing tricks and they couldn't measure the neck fold. Because of my placental issues, I had crappy blood results with crappy stats too. I found out that day in the office. I cried. But, I got some fab pictures of my girl, got to see her wiggling, being stubborn, making the dr. and sono techs agitated for not being in the correct position and overall I've moved on from it!! Now on to the level II next week!
Really, do what you what and what youre comfortable with.

Personally, I would not turn down the NT scan. It's a noninvasive test... it's literally some bloodwork and a sono. I can see not wanting to do a CVS or an amnio, as those have more risks, but the ONLY side effect of the NT scan is more info.

While this is true, please understand that this test has a high false negative rate and if you get a low number you will likely get an amino which does have more side effects. I got a NT and got a positive for defeat. I ended up getting an amino to find out that ds was fine, but honestly it was a nightmare. Three weeks of pure hell. If I ever get pregnant again I will not go for this test.

Well that I know... and having a complication IS rare.. but for the few people who do find out there are problems, I'm sure they would feel glad they did the test to be best prepared moving forward. However... I was never in that position of having a baby with downs syndrome, so I hate to say exactly how I would feel in situations I was not in. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I actually had it done today. I did it with my DD and now with #2. At first was not going to do it but it is non invasive and I am aware of the false positives so basically just went to see the baby!! :) The dr told me everything looked great but then asked me my age and tried to have me do it right there and then. I declined, as I declined with my obgyn and she actually agreed that the risk is too high of having a miscarriage with an amnio. I guess it really is up to how you want to look at it. Good luck

I had twins and did the NT more as just another chance to see the babies. I was fully aware of the false results that occur especially in twins. Thankfully, all was good. I loved that sono. To me, that was the first time the babies actually looked like babies! I could see their noses and the outline of their faces. It was awesome.

amnios are not very dangerous, btu depending on what you are looking for, you need to weigh your risk. For me, any risk was too much because the information wasnot necessary. I didnt want to know sex, and i wouldnt terminate if there was someting wrong. The sonos always looked great with no issues..blood work was always bad..good luck!!
