CPAP
Mom just got one. How hard do you think it will be to get used to for her?

Re: CPAP
DH has one and won't use it. He's too impatient to try to get used to it. His friend, on the other hand, swears by his and gets the best sleep he's ever had.

Re: CPAP
My bro has had one for many years (over 10), and he loves it. Me, on the other hand, could never get used to it. I tried it for about 2 months, and it was the worst sleep I'd ever had in my entire life. Now, I have an oral appliance, and it is so much better for me than a CPAP.
It totally depends on the individual. I think there's something like an 80% success rate with the CPAP machines.

Re: CPAP
Mom has severe apnea and has some heart issues that are compounding it.
She is a trooper and will keep trying. She just tried it last night and put it on and then took it off.
I think it will take some getting used to. I think she has had a steep memory and cognition decline over the last few years since her sleep isn't right.
I hope she can manage it.
What is the oral appliance?

What is the oral appliance?
It's a mouthguard that goes over the top and bottom teeth, and pushes the lower jaw out. That opens the airway, lessening or eliminating sleep apnea. It doesn't work for everyone, and not all insurances cover it ($$$), but for me, it did, and they did, so I'm happy. There is also a learning curve with the appliance. It's very uncomfortable at first, since you are stretching the jaw muscles and tendons. It's like trying to touch your toes when you can only really get to your shins or ankles. You will eventually get there, but it might take a little while.

Re: CPAP
I think it will take a few weeks. Dh gave up on his CPAP, but it took me a few weeks to a month time to get used to my mouthguard (for TMJ disorder, not apnea, but same idea in terms of getting used to it). My dentist told me even wearing it for a few hours is better than nothing. At first I couldn't fall alspee with it, so i took it out. Eventually I was falling asleep with it on, but I'd take it out, consciously or unconsciously in the middle of the night. Now it's totally normal to me. I would just encourage her that even if for the forst few weeks she only manages to wear it for an hour and maybe can't even fall asleep, that's still progress. It's not a waste or a failure, it's one step closer to getting used to it
