Texting/FB Friending past students
The posts about CandyGirl being inappropriate reminds me of people at my old job... and this one teacher in particular who would text her former students on the phone.. and friend them on Facebook.
This to me is just WAYYYYYYYY too close for comfort. In my opinion, its just SO unprofessional and just asking for trouble.
Do you, or do you KNOW of any teachers in your building who do this?

Re: Texting/FB Friending past students
NO WAY would I EVER text a student.
I was actually thinking about this today. The only exception I could think of was an overnight school trip to another state or country. In that case, I'd want students to be able to get in touch with me while on the trip in case of an emergency.
But I can tell you, NO WAY IN H-E-double hockey sticks in this day and age would I EVER chaperone the teenagers of today on one of those trips. Why should I risk my job, license and family's financial future so they can travel and act completely irresponsibly? It's WAY too much of a liability. IMO, their parents can take them on such trips.
BTW: Two of my former students are LIF mammas. We've posted on each other's threads but were not friends on FB or anything. It's not personal, I just don't think it's safe to have ties to former students who might still have ties in the school district.
I will not friend any of my fellow teachers who have former students as friends. When some have called me out for not accepting their friend request I've told them the reason why and said, "but we can still be friends in real life"...lol.
BTW: There are several states in which teachers are prohibited from having a FB account.

Re: Texting/FB Friending past students
I know several teachers, at the school where I used to work, who have their current students as their FB friends, and also kids who are still students at the school. The kids comment on their pictures & their status updates. Personally I think that's nuts & I wouldn't do it, even though I don't have anything you could call scandalous at all on my FB. I just think there needs to be boundaries, and having your students as FB friends just makes them too familiar & privy to the details of your personal life, which isn't appropriate for a teacher/student relationship IMO. The only FB friends I have who are minors, are also my relatives.
That being said, I have accepted former students of mine as FB friends, but they graduated many years ago, are all now in their twenties, & I no longer work at the school (or any school for that matter).
And I would never give my phone number to a student!!!!!!! I think that's just asking for all sorts of trouble.

Re: Texting/FB Friending past students
Funny thing I noticed about teachers from my district. The only teachers who are friends with current and previous students are the music teachers. I love them to death, but come on!
What about being friends with the parents on fb? I've noticed that too and I'm like !

Re: Texting/FB Friending past students
I know some teachers at my school have given students their phone numbers, but that is mostly limited to coaches and to when students are going on a long distance field trip. Also I know some of the "good" kids at my school, babysit for a lot of my co-workers so they obviously have each others numbers.
Also - some of my colleagues are FB friends with students who have graduated. I am not friends with any of my former students, but I have had like 10 students waiting for a response for a year.

Re: Texting/FB Friending past students
I teach at a middle school in NYC and they have reminded us over and over, even implemented a "policy" to not befriend students on social networks, and it's STILL an issue at my school with some teachers!

The PARENTS??? Wow.
I feel like the whole social network thing is just bizarre in itself in many ways. My DH and I were just talking the other day about how when the internet first came about, we were told not to share our real name, or address, and pictures. Well, besides giving away and address, Facebook crosses the line for so many boundaries! It's literally a gateway into your personal life.. I can't imagine "friending" students. What's the purpose?
A coworker of mine said she wanted to keep tabs on her students because she was genuinely concerned about them (middle school). I understand the sentiment, but there are other ways to show you care than putting your job on the line.

Re: Texting/FB Friending past students
I would never "friend" a current student on FB ever. I have many family members who are HS students and post pics of themselves drinking and doing other questionable things... I would not want to see my students in this light AND I feel like it would be a huge conflict of interest.
I am still on the fence about students who have graduated, hence why they are in friend request limbo.

Re: Texting/FB Friending past students
I have a couple former students- now well into their 20s- but none current. And I do have two former students who are about to graduate 8th grade and I want to stay in touch because I want to be able to help them with recommendations, etc. down the line. They come to me often for advice about academic things and I know them well. But that's the extent of it. I am also resigning from the DOE so that factors in too.
I did once give my cell number to a parent and she let her daughter text me which I ignored.

but you're talking about a school where my AP has a son that's a senior and another in 8th grade..
where i've had school sleep overs in gyms with my students
where i get invited to bar/bat mitzvah's on a regular basis
it's just a different culture

Re: Texting/FB Friending past students
I have some former students as friends, but I block them from seeing most of my FB profile/wall/pictures. At this point most of them are youngadults (20/21/22). Some are married and several have children older than mine. One of my former students has my cell, but we were going to meet me to discuss her graduate school options.
No way in hell would I have done this with a current student.
eta: I worked in a HS before I went out on my extended maternity leave.

Re: Texting/FB Friending past students
No, never! Not with current or past students, not with parents or administration.
I've had kids friend me ( now I'm not searchable ) and instantly denied. I've heard stories of teachers writing back to a student saying sorry we can't be friends on the Internet and they have gotten in trouble.
Ive had kids ask me if I have a fb and I say no
A para that worked in my class friended me on fb. I first accepted her bc it was weird not to since she worked with me but shortly after I defriended her bc she has 3 kids in our school.
I would never text

Yep. Until you work in a private school, you don't get it. I've worked at state funded schools for kids with autism, and it is a completely different relationship. I am friends on facebook with several past-parents and love getting updates.
