Beach day at school....
I know beach DAY kind of gives the game away but to be honest I thought for the younger set - kindergarten they would only do a half day...is this normal in other schools that the kids will literally be at the beach all day - from 9.15 - 2.30?..
I am kind of freaking out a bit as I am nervous to have my daughter near water without me watching her - I know the teachers will be there and life guards etc but still....I guess I will be packing up my younger son for a day at the beach!!

Re: Beach day at school....
My kid would not be participating in this beach day unless I was a chaperone. Too many kids, never enough eyes. I'll never forget that little one that drown last year on a field trip. I can't even believe schools offer this as a field trip.

Re: Beach day at school....
Thank you!! I am always second guessing myself in things like this as no one else seems to care or worry!
I wont let my sister take my DD to the beach as she has two kids herself and I know how easily it is to get distracted.
I am so torn as DD is all excited about it but i honestly cannot spend an entire day at the beach with my 2 1/2 year old...maybe I will organize a weekend trip and go with her in the morning and then take her out of school early....

Re: Beach day at school....
My son just went on the beach trip. The kids were not allowed near the water. My BFF went with him. I didn't want him to go alone and I have a 2.5 year old also. Our school doesn't allow siblings on field trips. She said they had it under control and no children were near the water.
Do you have anyone else that can go with her? If not, I'm sure she can miss it. I don't understand the purpose of a beach field trip anyway.
ETA: they were there from 10-1. They can't possibly be there all day. They have to get on the bus with their class, that takes forever, and they have to get back to school to pack up and go home.

Re: Beach day at school....
Thanks...the notice specifically said they will be boarding the bus at 9.15 - it takes 10 mins to get to the beach from the school - 15 mins max and that they would be leaving the beach at 2.30 pm - school gets out at 3.10 so they will be back in time for the kids who take a bus home. Plus the permission slip asks if your child can go in the water or not?? so I say No and my daughter has to sit on the beach while her friends go in the water?
I just think its too much - 2- 2.5 hours is more than enough time to be at the beach I think.

Are the lifeguards being hired by the school? Because I don't think any beaches are guarded on the weekdays until later in the month.

I agree, that's a long time at the beach. Maybe you could go for 2 or 3 hours and only let her in the water during that time, or take her home with you when you leave.
I would want to keep my DS home, I would be worried, but my DH wouldn't let me. He would talk me into letting him go.
Last year his summer camp went to the pool and beach every other day. DH talked me into letting DS go. My stomach was in knots for the whole 6 weeks. He was fine, and he had a lot of fun.
I think whatever choice you make will be the right one.

Re: Beach day at school....
I would NOT want my DD go on that field trip. I wouldnt want her in the water without me being there. It would suck for her to be one of a few kids stuck on the beach while other kids were in the water. Also that is a LONG day at the beach! Who will be monitoring the sunscreen? The water and sunscreen are a lot of responsiblility for the teachers, plus making sure no one wanders off. It is not worth the risk.

No way. I would not allow my child to go to the beach. I think that it is a dangerous trip it just takes one second to take your eyes off the kids and they very well could be in the water.

Re: Beach day at school....
My DS (1st grade) just did the beach trip yesterday. They were not allowed to wear swim suits and not allowed near the water. I parked nearby for a while and watched and the children were actually very well behaved - played in the sand and on the play equipment. There were about 40 kids, two teachers and two chaperones. I was a little concerned about the water but they kept them far away from it. We also had a stern discussion with DS before he left for school that day about what was and was not appropriate for his field trip.

our they even allowed to put sunscreen on them? The only reason I ask this is that yesterday DD had her kindergarten orientation and we were told to put sunscreen on them at home on sunny warm days because I thought they said the state does not allow them to put sunscreen on the children (but that might be a district rule not a state rule).

I don't even understand the purpose of taking a field trip to the beach if the kids won't even be going near the water. It seems really silly. Why not a local park with a playground?

They walked from the school and wanted to play in the sand. It was way too cold for going in the water yesterday anyway.

Re: Beach day at school....
I teach HIGH SCHOOL and that was our SENIOR trip until just recently when the young lady died in long beach or somewhere a few years ago on a senior trip. We are no longer allowed to go to the beach and I would NEVER send my child to the beach in kindergarten!!! I am pretty laid back about where he goes too!

I don't think I would send my child on a beach field trip. If they were going in the water, 100000x def not. If they were not going in the water, I MIGHT allow if if my child really pushed. But if not, they would be staying home that day. Too many things can happen, even near the water - not worth it to me.

Re: Beach day at school....
We have had it a couple of times - they took the ferry over to Sunken Forest. The kids did not go in the water - they walked through the preserve, went into a cove, found sand crabs and horseshoe crabs and shells - and played in the sand. I think they DID dip their feet in the water too. Rob was chaperone though.. we weren't in love with the idea of water plus a shitton of screaming kids without one of us there to make sure our kid was okay. But Rob said they were really very good about keeping the kids well watched - almost OVERLY protective.
My older son has a Fishing Trip with the school coming up.. and while we trust him and the school, he's still having a chaperone with him!

Re: Beach day at school....
My sons Pre-k class had a beach trip a few weeks ago. If you did not have someone to chaperone your child, child could not go.
We did not go in the water. We collected shells, teacher read stories, kids sat and all had snack together, then played on the playground.
We were there a little over 2 hours and it was fine. I was OK with the rule every child had to have a chaperone. I don't think there are ever enough eyes and my DS being around the water, makes me so nervous.

Re: Beach day at school....
We live on the North Shore, so I might change my tune if it we're on the ocean.
Our school goes to the beach (no water) to learn about the nature/wildlife. They collected shells for a project of sorting and then creating a picture frame. The teacher shows the hermit and horseshoe crabs, etc. We live so close to the beach, I think it's important for the kids to know about their community/environment.
I wouldnt like a trip where they would swim.

When my DD went on a beach field trip they were not allowed to go in the water at all. They took them to teach them about marine life. I didnt have a problem with it,guess Im the odd one out

Re: Beach day at school....
On my DD's field trip to the beach they weren't allowed near the water, for liability reasons.
A friend of mine teaches 1st grade and they go on a field trip every year to the beach, they walk there and back to the school, which I think is just as dangerous as the water. As for the kids going in the water. i think they're allowed to put their feet in thats it.
i wouldn't feel confortable with my child swimming in the water without me there.

Re: Beach day at school....
I have been a teacher for 17 years......I wouldl NEVER take my students to a beach . I would never want to be "that" person who has to call up a parent..nope, not me.....
My kids will NEVER go near water unless I am with them. Kids don't realize how much their fooling around can be dangerous! And, I would never want to be that parent who receives that phone call..nope, not me!
