Cake help. Fondant / whipped cream
I wanted to get some opinions regarding cake???
So we always get a bakery cale with whip cream icing but i am throwing my MIL a 70's surprise party and thought of getting one of those fondant fancy cakes...
My question is which do you prefer??
Is it worth $$ to get a fancy cake???

I like the way fondant tastes but IMO it's not worth the money. I do have to say Costco makes an amazing cake that tastess awesome. We were going to get one of those crazy fondant cakes for DD's 1st bday party but ended up getting a Costco cake for 17.99 and everyone raved about it

I like Fondant. I think it looks nice.
A TAste of Home in bellemore did my wedding cake and they also did a top tier replica for me (fondant, sugar flowers, the whole 9) and the price was really reasonable. Price out both ways!

Re: Cake help. Fondant / whipped cream
Fondant is not the tastiest medium. In fact, unless it's marshmallow fondant, I peel it right off and eat the icing underneath with the cake.
That being said, you really sometimes NEED to cover a cake in fondant to make a certain design work. It is definitely worth the money for fancy cake because people love a cake that looks like something else. And as long as you go to a good bakery, the cake and filler icing will still be delicious. Fondant just isn't most people's cup of tea.
ETA: And I think you might be surprised by some of the fondant cake prices!

Re: Cake help. Fondant / whipped cream
The fondant at A taste of Home is actually really good. I've had gross fondant, too.

Thanks...
Its Like double the price for a fondant cake. I was told the fondant is a marshmellow fondant and i know this baker has gotten great reviews here - i am sooooo torn on what to do

That depends on what kind of fancy cake you want.
You already know that a fondant cake is expensive and it's not always tasty. I don't care what people say - it's really not the tastiest frosting out there and most people will peel it off...marshmallow flavored or not.
The question is - what kind of design do you have in mind? Your design and what you are looking for will really be what dictates your frosting. Some cake designs just won't work unless it's done completely in fondant, while others can be done with buttercream and accented with fondant decorations which will cut your costs a good deal.

The price isn't JUST because of the fondant. Until you do a shaped/decorative cake like that, you just don't know how much effort goes into it. It's a LOT of hand work done and it takes a lot of time. So I totally get why it's double the price. IMO, it is MORE than double the work of a buttercream cake. But it's also double the effect. I feel like fondant cakes are more for show and buttercream cakes are more for taste.
