Wish me Luck!

My poor girl, Lucy, gets spayed this Sunday. I know it's better and healthier for her but I HATE having to do this to her. My other dog, Irwin, was a MESS when he got neutered. He peed all over himself, he wouldn't eat or drink, couldn't sleep. He just laid around in his cone whimpering. He'd only stop crying when I laid down on the floor next to him and pet him until he fell asleep. Chat Icon Of course the next day, he woke up like the whole ordeal never happened. And then I was the one in pain from sleeping on the floor. Chat Icon

And this time, DH isn't going to be around. He's in AC for a bachelor party so I have to wrangle this 70 lb. beastie and bring her to the vet on my own! Chat Icon

Here's a picture of my lively little love muffin...

beautiful pup! Good luck to both of you!

btw- when I had my dog spayed, the vet didn't give me pain med for her because he said dogs don't understand they need to take it easy, they need to feel the pain to actually take it easy. but i felt terrible because she definitely did feel the pain. So, see if your vet will give pain med at least for the first day

OMG! Same here. We've always gotten pain meds for at least the first night and then a week's worth of antibiotics. I already double checked to make sure the vet provides the cone and the pain meds and they do! She also gets a camo outfit for being part of Operation PIT. Chat Icon But I think I'm probably more excited about that than she will be. Chat Icon

Thanks for the heads up though!

Good luck to both of you!! Chat Icon Chat Icon I know how it is ... Whenever I've taken one of mine to get spayed or neutered it just broke my heart!!! I think people take it worse than animals! They're usually just groggy that day and are fine soon after!

Re: Wish me Luck!

Thanks everyone! I'm also afraid of what my house is going to look like on Monday... Lucy's tail is already notorious for knocking things over... I can only imagine the kind of damage she can do with the cone on her head! Chat Icon

Re: Wish me Luck!

We ended up taking the cone off. Granted it was a cat, so I'm not sure what the difference is as far as how necessary it is .... but litter was getting in it .. he wasn't able to reach his food and water dish... it was just awful. Do you know if it's ok to give him breaks to not wear it?

I'm assuming it's the same as it was with Irwin. We could take it off whenever we wanted, we just had to watch him. Irwin and Lucy are lickers and chewers so my only fear is that she'll rip her stitches out. If I'm home though, I'll probably take it off her. After taking some incredibly embarassing photos, naturally. Chat Icon

Re: Wish me Luck!

She will be fine. She really will. My vet didn't even make us use a cone. We put a tshirt on our dog when we were with her, so she could not reach the wound. I would not leave the shirt on when we would leave (then again we never left her until she was healed a few days later).

It's so hard, I know. But they do well, they are strong.

Re: Wish me Luck!

So, Lucy had her surgery yesterday and everything went really well. We went for the low-cost spay/neuter which is offered by the ASPCA as part of Operation PIT. I will say it was a little difficult when we got there. They were running behind schedule so there were about 20 unaltered mostly full grown pit bulls in a tiny waiting room. We actually opted to wait outside, which helped a little but the dogs were all really hyper. This was after an hour long walk and a half an hour at the dog park for us. But the doctors and nurses were excellent- they were very gentle and loving with the dogs and you can tell they had a special place in their hearts for pit bulls.

In addition to the spaying, they brought Lucy up to date on her shots and microchipped her for no additional cost. We were also given two days of pain medication. I'd *highly* recommend this service to anyone who has a pit.

And Lucy is fine now. She was really drugged up when we got her home and she couldn't climb the stairs or eat. She cried a little if she was left alone in a room, so I slept in the living room with my hand on her last night. As soon as she woke up around 5 this morning, I could tell she was fine. I heard her trotting around the kitchen looking for something to eat so you knew she was back to her old self. She even stole a toy from our other dog, Irwin. Chat Icon Classic Lucy. We kept her in the bedroom since the crate is a TIGHT fit with her silly cone on and we're afraid of our other dog licking her wounds or of her being aggressive because she's in pain. So far though, no issues. Irwin has been really gentle with her and Lucy's been appreciating all the attention.

Here's the little muffin in the car ride home. She was so drugged up she couldn't even hold her own weight up. Chat Icon Poor little monkey!
