How do you get services at school and at home?

DD is aging out of EI after the summer. She starts preschool in Sept 5x/week and will be getting PT/OT/Speech there. She was approved for 4 PT/week but the school she is attending will only give 3. I asked if she could get 1 at home and I was told no. That she either gets school based services or home based, that she can't get a mix of both. I really don't understand. So many people I hear from get a mix. What do I have to do to get that for her?

Maybe she can go to an agency for the extra pt session? We like all of our ei therapists so much that we are going to see the speech and Ot 1 x a week at their agency. We wound up not being able to get this covered through cpse and are using our insurance.

Honestly, I think it is a combination of the school district, the evaluation, your EI team and diagnosis. I too know about several kids with the same diagnosis and level of functioning as DS and their children get home services where we were told absolutely not "that it is just not done...."Chat Icon

How do you get services at school and at home?

Like the above pp said, it had a lot to do with school district diagnosis and what school your child is going to.

We got home services and are still getting them. AJ will be 5 in August. For CSE he will still get at leat 1 hour home and the Ed and speech veal will determine if more is needed. He is considered high functioning, will most likely be in an integrated class in 2 years.

We for the most part have gotten everything we needed. But for pre-school we chose a collaborative program over a program that removes your child from the classroom for therapy.

At 3 AJ was still getting 10 hours home therapy at 4 it was reduced to 6

I don't get it. What are the magic words I have to say? I'm so done with feeling (and knowing) that my DD gets less because she doesn't have one of the "well known" diagnoses. Her syndrome is 1 in 15,000 so nobody is an expert or knows what to do for her, so she gets the minimum as far as I'm concerned.

What is a "collaborative program"?

Which kids get more services...those who are expected to succeed with more therapy? Or those who are expected to always be "special-ed" or low functioning?

a collaborate program is where they don't pull out for services, it is done in the classroom as a group or one on one, but in the classroom setting. i chose that, because say you get 3x30 of speech a week. the clock starts as soon as the therapist enters the room, so if your child has a 10 min meltdown and doesn't want to leave thats 10 min into the 30 min of services, so essentially they are really getting 20 min of speech, but wait... if it takes 5 min to walk to the room, thats another 5 minutes, so now your down to 15 min one on one, but wait, say if in the process of heading to the room for speech they have another meltdown that last for 5 min, it leaves you now with 10 min speech.

as for the services at home, yes ASD children usually will get hoe services as well as in school services as well as most DS children. fighting is a PITA but if you feel she needs more then what she is getting at school and you WANT and can prove she will benefit from that extra 30 minutes at home keep on fighting.

also what are her test scores... the SD looks into that as well and will determine if the speech is that significant then more at home services will be provided. i have also heard that if the school you are choosing to send her to only allows 3 and you were approved for 4, to look at other schools that offer the 4.

i am sorry you are going through this and i wish i had more positive things to say.

The only "magic" word that worked for me is "regress". Then they have no leg to stand on. Why can't she get all the therapies at school? It's different for me because my son is ASD so all therapies are done at school and then he gets home based teacher services 5 days a week.

we're starting at a different preschool that does offer services more than 3x a week, but I haven't heard of anyone else in our district being approved by CPSE for home and center-based therapy.Chat Icon
