I had a contraction last night...
... and it scared the living hell out of me.
I had been reading a chapter on early labor and contractions in my book a few weeks back (When you're Expecting Twins, Triplets and More) and I picked it right up and read it as soon as I calmed down. Yep- that's what it was.
We got back from a wedding around midnight. I had danced and ate like I normally would. I climbed into bed with the book and began to read when I noticed I felt middle back pain/tightness. I sat up a little straighter and reached for the Tums thinking it was heartburn (which I have only occasionally had so far). The pain and tightness went to the front and sure enough, as I stood up, It got worse and worse. The tightness was so bad, and my belly was hard as a rock and in pain too. I had my husband basically smash the heel of his hand into my back to massage it out, but I had a feeling the whole time that this wasn't heartburn. I started pacing a little, taking deep breaths, and it went away in about 2 minutes.
After I checked back in the book, it confirmed my fears... this wasn't heartburn. And, it could happen again.
Has this happened to anyone?

Re: I had a contraction last night...
It sounds like Braxton Hicks. I think I started getting them around 26 weeks give or take. It felt like tightness, my stomach was hard and hurt. It is not labor contractions. My dr. gave me an amount that was normal in an hour, because at times they would come and go periodically.
I really wouldn't worry. This is advice I was given, but I never actually followed. I worried about everything. I would just call your dr. and let him know. LIke I said, it sounds like Braxton Hicks, which is nothing to worry about.
How far along are you?

Oh M, That happened to me once. You may have heard this story
I was already on leave from work 26 weeks+. One day I was cleaning and as I was dusting the chair rail in the dining room (I could show you the exact spot ) I felt a contraction.
Of course, I was home alone, DH was at work. Called his desk- voice mail... called reception- not there... called his cell phone- voicemail... called his gym down the block... paged him 3x and nothing... so I just started dialing random extensions until I got one of his co-workers... threw the entire office into a panic... OMG the twins are coming His boss (who was quite a big man at the time) raced out of the building, sprinted three blocks , ran into the gym, passed the front desk and ripped DH off of the treadmill. It was like a scene out of a movie!
DH was wearing his headphones and didn't hear the three pages And he left his cellphone off and in his locker ... DUH!! Oh, he will never live that down!
It does scare the poop out of you As for pain, don't worry about it because it's going to happen whatever way it's supposed to happen And that comes from me, you know how much of a control freak I am
Def call the doc and let them know

Re: I had a contraction last night...
Thanks for this lovely and hilarious story,T! I did call him the next morning, and they told me to monitor myself carefully every day and to call if it happened again. It hasn't happened since! I also stopped doing all of the things I used to do at once and now I spread them out over a longer period of time.. like walking the dog, weeding and feeding the plants, cleaning, cooking and hardly ever but yes occasionally- laundry. Did I mention I'm still teaching summer school and making chocolates. Yeah that was my body screaming "STOP!"

Re: I had a contraction last night...
when I first started having pre term contractions they felt like menstral cramps. Sometimes I could stop them by drinking a lot of water and laying down other times I couldn't. Had a lot of trips to L&D.
When in doubt call the doctor.

Re: I had a contraction last night...
BH are definitely scary! I had a bunch of them and some mild cramping down below so doctor made me come in to check my cervix, everything was fine and the BH stopped....but I know whenever I do too much they come back. Definitely try to lay on your left side and chug lots of water (any tiny bit of dehydration can bring on contractions) when you feel it happen. BTW I'm reading the same book and I find it very helpful! I hope I have big babies like they mention from most of the moms in that clinic! Good luck! :)
