Anyone Foster?

I may be interested in fostering animals but I'm afraid I don't have enough space. Also I have two cats.

How much room do you need? Also they need to be kept separate from the other animals? What's the process of getting set up and how does the process work for finding a permanent home (does the shelter/agency do this part?)

Thanks

Are you looking to foster dogs or cats? Space may not be an issue depending on which rescue group or shelter you work with. Fences are a must for fostering dogs. As far as keeping them seperate from your other animals, it depends on the animal's temperment that you foster. You would need to know the correct way to introduce your animals to the foster pet. With all of the groups I know of, it is their job to find the home, as well as their job to supply you with all of the food, vet care and any other items you may need. I'm not sure where you live but the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter (in Wantagh) recently announced a foster care program.

Fostering is amazing! It's the best feeling ever to know that you made such a huge impact on the life of an otherwise homeless animal. God bless you for opening up your heart and your home! Please keep us all posted!

Re: Anyone Foster?

We failed as foster parents, we adopted our cat and dog who we were fostering.

When we fostered our dog, I emailed a local rescue group and the founder asked us to come down to an adoption event and pick out a dog. I was able to walk every single dog there and I picked our Casey. She walked well on a leash and was older. the founder stopped by our apartment once and emailed us for updates once a week. The rescue group did find adopters for Casey but it did not work out with them. They ended up giving her back because she peed in their apartment and ate a wall. I later found out after she was given back to us that she had a UTI (hence the peeing) and she never chewed on a wall or anything so I think that was a lie because they wanted to give her back to the group. The group asked if we wanted to adopt her and we said yes (Husband fell in love with her even though he did not want to foster a pet).

For our cat, we went with another rescue group, I was thinking about adopting a cat but was unsure how the cat would react to our Casey. So we fostered a cat for about a month and the group sent someone over to our apartment with the cat, they assessed our apartment and watched how Casey and our cat (Ozzy) interacted. They asked if we wanted to adopt him and we said yes. Usually foster parents would get first dibs on their foster pets.

Depending on the group they might as you to bring your foster pet to events so they can be seen and hopefully adopted out that day. If they are not adopted you might need to pick up your foster pet, if you decide you would like to keep fostering them.

If you have any questions feel free to FM me, i can try my best to answer your questions.

My bff fosters dogs all the time in VA. She has successfully adopted out like 5 dogs. She puts videos of them on petfinder, brings them to events, etc.

Gl and thanks for saving a life!!

I dont know if I would be able to foster an animal. I think I would get too attached and not want to give them up
