Just a vent..
We are currently looking for a rental home/apartment and I can not count on ONE hand how many times I've been asked if my dog was a non-negotiable. The first time I didn't even understand what the agent was asking me and she then said you know can you get rid of her? No lady, I can't. Thanks. If I have to hear one more time that it's her size landlords are concerned about I'm going to scream. What is it about her size? She's a lab! And no she can't go on a diet either.

I find it really sucky that housing is so pitiful on long island. Aside from allergies one of the most common reasons for giving up a pet is "Moving."

Re: Just a vent..
I know of an agent who specializes in pet friendly rentals on LI. Do you want her info? I am sorry you are dealing with this.

Why did they ask if your dog could go on a diet? Because of weight limit? I don't think they really weigh dogs, I think they just use that as an excuse to say no.

I would definitely like that. I know someone who has a dog who will be looking in a couple of months.

Re: Just a vent..
Goobster- I'd love the real estate agent's info! Thanks so much.
They didn't actually ask if she could go on a diet, I was being sarcastic, because the conversation was so ridiculous that I almost expected that to be the next comment.

Re: Just a vent..
I agree. Do you know I am BUYING a house because I couldnt find an apartment to rent with my 2 cats and Golden Retriever! The only option I had was to rent a house and even that was incredibly difficult to find! Then I found one after looking forever and my mortgage will be the same as rent, so Im buying! Its terrible.

Totally awful, if we were planning on staying in NY for the long term we'd totally buy, but we are pretty sure that after my husbands 3 year fellowship we'll be heading south. Crazy how high rent prices are these days and how low mortgage rates are!

Re: Just a vent..
I lived in three rentals with my 80lb dog and three cats. Not a single apartment was listed as pet friendly. We "convinced" the landlords. We offered references from our prior landlord that there was no problem and also offered a "pet security deposit". Once they met us, saw our financial stuff, etc. they "took the chance" on us. Ask you agents who might seem flexible. A lot of times they just say that bc it's their preference but would rather take a great reliable tenant in the end with pets over some of the other riffraff they probably showed the apt to.
Also, the weight limit thing is so incredibly dumb.

Re: Just a vent..
We had the same problem when we decided to move out of the city last year - we could not find a decent pet-friendly rental (despite there being sooo many rentals on the market in general), so we ended up moving to NJ in a high-rise where everyone has a pet.
I would gladly pay a much higher security deposit to cover any damage we couldn't fix ourselves.
