HELP! Starting to get a twinge in my knee!
So I've done P90X and have been doing Insanity as well as running, since December basically (Insanity and running started around March.) Last week during an Insanity workout while jumping my knee started to twinge. It went away but then a couple days ago I noticed it again. Last night it was bothering me a bit and then again today after a low impact workout (but with lunges). I just decided to start doing races this fall and really don't want to stop training but also don't want to risk serious injury. Any suggestions for how to treat it and still allow myself to work out? It's not a terrible pain, really it feels mostly like a twinge when I bend too deep or straighten it too straight...and then after a workout plus with this humidity it has been bothering me on and off. The best way to describe it is it feels like a bit more than a tightness...like a tight muscle that can't be stretched out and then a twinge every so often.
Any advice is appreciated!

Try stretching well after your workouts. If the pain continues you should consider seeing an orthopedist. Unfortunately most doctors are going to recommend avoiding high impact workouts.

HELP! Starting to get a twinge in my knee!
Honestly, take some time off. I had the exact same pain a year and a half ago. Instead of taking time off, I ran 5 miles (which to me at the time was an easy run). I've done PT and been to 2 orthopedists but its still bad. I have trouble walking down stairs and it gives out at random times. I had on/off pain for a few days beforehand and tried to limit my workouts a bit. If I could go back in time, I would have just taken off a week or two. Instead, I never got to run sub 2 hr half marathon or full marathon I wanted to run. My pain is very similiar- it hurts when I straighten my leg completely. It's not awful pain, but its annoying, especially when my knee gives out! If you do continue to work out, I would avoid lunges and squats completely for awhile. Instead focus on upperbody and crosstraining. And definitely stretch and ice!
I hope you feel better.

You'll have to show me where the pain is. I have IT band issues on the sides of my knee and I know how to take care of them so I can still run.
It may not be it but its possible, so let's discuss

Re: HELP! Starting to get a twinge in my knee!
Thanks all. It is better this morning but today will definitely be a rest day and I think I'm just going to totally stop Insanity for now - I think all the jumping is really what's doing it, and I've heard this is a common problem with Insanity. My dad recommended a band to support my knee so if it continues to act up I may try that. I do stretch before/after all workouts but I'll try to focus a bit more on that area.
Rache - P57 may become a bigger part of my routine because I went yesterday and except for lunges it didn't bother my knee at all! Emily said P57 workouts will help strengthen the area, so I may try to go more often! And yeah, I'll show you the spot when I see you so you can give me tips!

Yes! My knee doesn't hurt in P57 either! Remember when we went and I told her about my "injury" at the beginning of class? It didn't bother me AT ALL during class!

Foam roll your IT bands! I have IT band syndrome and it gives me trouble when I don't stretch or foam roll. I also noticed a huge difference once I started weight trainng my legs seriously---once my quads got stronger, it took pressure off of my knees!

I agree with you---but I don't think its her IT band! She says it hurts above her kneecap---thats not IT band territory! I am a HUGE fan of foam rolling though!
