My kids and food! - VENT - UPDATE! I DID IT!

It is getting harder and harder to feed my kids! they like PB & J one day, the next, they don't like it!

SPaghetti and chicken nuggets is about all i can dump into them!!

It's so frustrating! Chat Icon

Any go-to recipes that you can share?

I can't believe that they eat worse as they age!!!!!

UPDATE - I tried this last night. I had an all and all out BRAWL with the oldest girl. she was punished and sent to her room (she got nasty with me when i told her she wasn't getting anything else) until she finally came down and ate 1/3 or her dish. then no treats. they FULLY understand i am NOT joking about this. tomorrow is pizza, thursday will be chicken cutlets, corn and maybe rice... friday - something easy. So my next fight can be thursday... let's see!!
thanks for all of your advice!!!Chat Icon

Re: My kids and food! - VENT

I'm sure a lot of us feel your pain!!! I find that I have to have conversations, often, about healthy choices, eating fruits & veggies and of course variety on a regular basis. I think around meal time, when they are hungry and you are stressed for them to eat, is not the best time to discuss it.

I find myself talking to them while in the car, or during bath time, just to sort of plant the seed so they are thinking about it too. It's slow progress, but I do see subtle changes and they do ask me if things are healthy so I know it's working.

It's not easy but you have to just be consistent and keep talking about it.

Good luck! Chat Icon

Re: My kids and food! - VENT

I know that this sounds bad, but i have gotten to the point, where you either eat what I cooked for dinner or not at all. I can't keep cooking 3 meals a night, one for me and DH and one for each of my children. I do always keep yogurt, applesauce and cut up fruit as sides with each dinner...so i know there is always something that they will eat. But if they decide to be picky then its just tough. The kitchen is also closed after i clean up after dinner. This was a tough lesson for my kids at first, but believe me they eat what they are given now. I don't have time to play short order cook.

I started this 3 years ago when my older ones were 2 & 3 years old. They have gone to bed hungry, I have had the older one throw up after wards because he didn't like it and it is still my rule. The baby is 16 months and she is giving me a hard time with food. Now I really don't give her an option. If she has 4 bites and the throws the rest on the floor dinner is done.

Kids will eat when the are hungry. I am also always trying new recipes and it makes it easier on them when everyone is trying something new. I also take components or one meal and try to alter it and say "well you like cheese, chicken cutlet and sauce, so it is just like a pizza" and that seems to work. My kids love turkey taco's so I found a recipe on skinny taste for turkey taco soup, I added less liquid and made it into a chili and is so good and they loved it.

I think you have older children, what about letting them pick out a recipe and then having them help you make it.

Totally agree!

By 18 months the kids eat what we eat, period. I am not making multiple meals. 1 skipped dinner is not going to hurt them and they both realized pretty quickly it's what is in front of them or nothing.

My kids and food! - VENT

I have started doing the same thing with my kid- eat what I serve, or find something in the fridge you want to eat, but I am not doing anything towards it... I always have carrots and broccoli and hummus, and if nothing else he will eat that. I also try to make things that I know he will like a few meals a week-- sometimes I will do whole wheat mac and cheese with pureed cauliflower or beans mixed in with the cheese sauce. I also do whole wheat pizza (either homemade, or Trader Joe's refrigerated) with veggies, etc. Rice and beans is always a big hit.

Re: My kids and food! - VENT

I have one child who eats well and the other who does not. Neither one of my kids are meat eaters really. I just accept that but it makes things tough for my little one who doesn't eat veggies either. It doesn't leave me many options for her. Dinners are mostly breakfast foods....eggs & toast, french toast, waffles + always fruit.

Ladies! you have convinced me! no more special meals, eat it or forget it.

What do you do about the "I'm so hungry" whine? give in, or still stay "TOUGH?!"

They either go to be hungry or I offer the same dinner. They usually go to bed 2 hours after I serve dinner. So I usually feed them at 6 and they are in bed by 8-8:30. I will give them 45 minutes tops to eat. If I see they are taking extra long, I put a timer on for 30 minutes and then thats it no second chances.

I know it sounds mean, but when you deal with this a lot you really stop caring and they start eating.

I've done this too & it works to some extent.

Unfortunately I think ds has a huge issue with food - it goes much deeper than food aversion. I've seen him vomit over a pea, a bean, it's crazy. He does eat some things & more than he used to eat. When he was younger, he would say "I don't like (insert food he liked)" & we'd say fine, "Don't eat it. Eat what's on your plate." Then later I realized when he said he didn't like something, he never ate it again, EVER. So the last time he said something, I had enough.

He said "I don't like eggs."
I said "Nope. You like eggs. You liked them yesterday. We are not eliminating any more food. We are only adding. You like them."

and he ate them!

Re: My kids and food! - VENT

My DS has always been picky- since he was an infant and he is 6 now. My Ped said many boys have issues with texture and it sorts itself out as they get older. He has always gagged and cried and what I found *works* is just being firm in what I was saying and stay consistant. I always add grapes or applesauce on the side and sometimes yogurt. He was very anti-veggies, esp broccoli and peas so I began adding them to pasta and rice and he ate them. Now I have gotten him to eat peas and other veggies alone but not broccoli..lol I am just coming to realize that eventually he will grow out of this phase, esp seeing other kids eating certain foods. He ate his first hot dog and hamburger this summer and actually demanded it out of no where. It was hilarious to see all of the adults tip toeing in excitement to give him a hot dog but acting like it was totally normal..lol

If he won't eat, I save the food on his plate (because I know he will be hungry later) and he is allowed to have that. Most times, it doesn't come to that since he knows that the food he didn't like hot won't be any better cold!

I do this too...you just have to stick to your guns, if you do decide to implement this; you can't cave. I know it isn't easy, but a few nights of whiney children is better than cooking 3 different meals for the next few years.

My kids and food! - VENT - UPDATE! I DID IT!

There was a great article in Real Simple magazine this month about a mom that put her children through dinnertime boot camp. It was a family issue this month. I wish I could find the article online!
