Any runners with asthma?

My endurance sucks for obvious reasons, but I love running and I would LOVE to train for a longer race, but I can't breathe. Maybe I am just scared to push. I get all wheezey after about a mile and half, and I feel like its a stretch when I push myself to do 3-4mi runs. Any advice?

Re: Any runners with asthma?

I used to have asthma, and in certain weather still get that wheeze when I run outside. A trainer once told me to focus on breathing in through my nose if I can. Also, that whole try for deep breaths thing makes it worse. Don't breathe overly shallow but don't try for very deep breaths either.

In the end, for me, in certain seasons I use a prophylactic inhaler at night and in the morning and that seems to keep it under control. Good luck!

Do you have an inhaler? My DH has asthma and is able to run fast and far. If he asthma is acting up, he uses his inhaler and continues on.

Yeah, I do and I do use it. I think its more psychological. I did a long run once and forgot my inhaler at home and had an asthma attack on the side of the road and now I feel like I can't do it. I guess just hearing that other people are able to do it might be enough to push me to do more. I am just overly cautious, I guess.

I have asthma and run short and long distances. Weather factors in greatly for me. I have issues below 40 degrees and in bad humidity. Have you talked to your doctor about changing your inhaler?

I have asthma, and run. I find that the running makes the attacks much less frequent. I don't use an inhaler anymore, but used to use one prior to. Now if I feel an attack coming on, I slow down (obv) and take long slow deep breaths in my nose out my mouth. Good luck!!

Same here. I think exercise in general and jogging in particular have made my attacks and use of the rescue inhaler less frequent. But, this may have happened over time. You need a good plan with your doc about your inhalers and exercise. I also have some issues when the air quality is poor or when it's too cold.

That is reassuring, thanks. I am a nervous-nelly and new to distance running and to asthma. I developed it this year after pneumonia a few times and a very contaminated school building. I am just nervous about pushing, but it helps to know other people are doing it. Thanks ladies!!
