Any helpful tips for newbie runners with asthma?
I used to run many, many, many years ago. When I hit my early 20's I had my first asthma attack. I work out regularly (I've done P90x and I do HIIT on the treadmill), but I have always hesitated to run outside in the elements and for any great distance. In August my DH and I did the Warrior Dash 5K obstacle course and we are signed up for the Rugged Maniac in Brooklyn in Nov. Over the past month I have started training outside. I think I am doing pretty well, but then I reach a point (around 3miles) and my brain and body seem to freak out and I panic about having a full blown asthma attack. Does anyone have experience with training and dealing with asthma and the fear that comes with it?

Oh, thank you so much!! I'm trying. I think. My goal is to get up to 25-30 miles a week running 5 days and do a half marathon in 8-12 mths from now. I just need to figure out how to stop freaking out when my breathing starts to get too irregular.

Are you freaking out because around the 3 mile mark you start experiencing trouble breathing or do you think it's more psychological? If you are having trouble breathing, do you have a pulmonologist you can see? Maybe your inhaler is not as effective as it needs to be. If it's more psychological, it's going to be a mind of matter deal. I understand why you'd be freaking out but you have to remind yourself that you're okay, you're strong and maybe just take some deep breathes and push through. It sounds like you're doing great!
