2nd grade

I am wondering how much harder this will get. I am looking through a 2nd grade math workbook I book and I am shocked at some of the stuff that they will be doing! I know I definitely wasn't doing some of this stuff in 2nd grade.

Who else has a child going into 2nd?

I do. I know there is a big emphasis on knowing addition and subtractioin facts.

I have a son starting second grade.

I'm at a small advantage though because I have an older son who was in 2nd grade 2 years ago, plus I taught second grade for the past 3 years.

DS is starting 3rd grade & did pretty well in 2nd. What I found to be most challenging was not the work itself but, how they are taught to do it. I tried to help my son on several occassions with math and show him how to do it, only to be told "what are you doing? thats not how we learned" and he would show me some other way that confused me! He also struggled with some ABC order; especially when the words were similar and had the first same letters. he had a tutor come to the house 1x a week, which really helped!
