what are some interventions for DS
So many of you were AMAZING with the advice I asked for in may ab DS who is entering 1st grade. He did great in K and was above level in most subjects but his teacher flagged him in june for not focusing or paying attention. She believed he my have an auditory processing issue but when I mentioned this to my ped, he said if he is not having an issue learning, I shouldn't worry. His teacher told me to request testing from the district and new teacher as soon as school starts but many of you said for me to request some in class interventions first. What can I request? Sitting in front of the class? What else? TIA

The first step with RtI (Response to Intervention), which is NYS law, is to call an IST (Instructional Support Team) meeting. They will meet (w/o you) and discuss ways that they can help him or decide if evaluations need to be done.

Should I wait until the parent teacher night late sept to discuss this or ask for it right away? Just bc I am not sure if DS really has an issue or maybe it was just his response to that teacher in particular.

what are some interventions for DS
By June i think most kids are having the same issues!! Personally, if you are concerned I would write a letter to the teacher explaining what happened and how you would like to stay on top of it. And if she sees anything within the first few weeks to please contact you ASAP. I would talk to DS over the first few weeks about what he is learning and doing in class too. Then I would make sure to bring it up again at parent teacher night if possible. (Sometimes at open school nights its not) If not I would request a private meeting to touch base.
Good luck!

This is a great idea, thanks! I am going to write a letter to the teacher explaining everything and I am hoping this will keep open communication between us. I'm hoping he likes 1st grade a lot more than K.
