Anyone do shakes / smoothies?
I spied an immersion blender in Sur La Table and remembered that I was going to look into making myself shakes with protein. Then I got a $10 coupon in email, and I'm thinking I have to buy it now.
Anyone make smoothies or shakes? Any tips on what to avoid with the immersion blender, recipes, and especially protein powders?
Shakeology sounds delish but holy expensive.

We do Shakeology shakes which are good. You can also buy some whey protein. Add either skim milk or water and a couple fruits.

Just a handheld blender basically that fits in a large cup, bowl, pot. This is the highest rated one on Consumer Reports, that they sell at Sur La Table.

It chops ice too, which I like and I am SO lazy so something I could hand wash in 5 seconds is great.
Do you think it matters what protein powder you use? I don't want to "bulk" necessarily and always associated whey with muscle building.
What does the flax seed do for you, and do you replace a meal with your smoothie?

Do you use that as a meal? What do you put it in, some kind of big cup with a straw or just drink it in one sitting?
I don't like anything heavy first thing and used to just drink coffee. I need something good but small to start my day.

I chose a low sugar, high protein one with BAA (amini aciids) to help with work out recovery..its called Isolate Protein. I would go to Vitamin World and explain what you want to do, they are VERY helpful and can recommend the right powder for "you". Flax seed is a good source of Omega-3, lignans & dietary fiber & helps balance hormones. I drink my shakes after a run or a hard work out & sometimes to replace a meal. Its very filling if you blend and whip it.. it gets real thick and fluffy.. PS: your not going "bulk" up like a man.. you dont have those hormones ..the protein helps you rebuild or maintain the muscles you have..dont worry your not gonna look like the Hulk.

Thank you I have a lot to learn about this. I like the idea of ingesting more vitamins but am not good with pills, so this would be a great in between.
I don't know why, but it doesn't take a lot for me to build muscle. My sister is the same and she's developed a pretty masculine look in her peak physical shape. I can always change it up depending on results, I just wanted to start out right if I could.
My husband agrees so we're going to Sur La Table after my jog this morning. Thanks for your help!

When I searched for hand blender, I kept getting mixers with the two beaters attached to it. I learned a better way to find it with immersion.
We bought the Breville blender and are in HEAVEN right now. We made smoothies with:
1 cup of green / jasmine tea 3/4 cup grapes 1 banana 1 tablespoon honey 1/4 cup coconut milk
So we can't taste the green tea at all but everything else is yummy! Now that we had our maiden smoothie voyage, I'm going to look for other recipes and ingredients. Yay!

Re: Anyone do shakes / smoothies?
One that is delicious and can be frozen as a treat is Pineapple, strawberry, and a scoop of your favorite vanilla protein ( I drink Sun Warrior). You can add some plain, unsweetened Almond Milk to it if need be. Many times I just do the strawberry and pineapple alone (that's like a special treat because really it has no nutrional value).
Also Kiwi added to anything takes over the flavor. I especially love to add kiwi when I am adding spinach to my shakes.

Re: Anyone do shakes / smoothies?
I don't believe in protein shakes or adding stuff other than real food to my smoothies. I think it's uneccesary and would rather have the real deal (get the nutrition I need from food not powders).
I use an Oster blender and do a combination of frozen fruit, yogurt/milk/almond milk, flax meal and that's it!

Re: Anyone do shakes / smoothies?
Thanks for your thoughts, ladies! I'm going out for a jog and planning my post-jog smoothie ahead of time.
I picked up some vegan plant-based protein powder, macha green tea powder, almond milk and flax seed oil today. We have a leftover fruit boat from a bbq yesterday, so I'm looking forward to what kind of concoction I can come up with!

Oh and acidophilus, something my doctor recommended a lifetime ago that I never heeded.

Re: Anyone do shakes / smoothies?
I use bluebonnet protein power (whey and casein) and mix it with Kefir and ice. Occasionally I will add fruit. Personally I do not think the immersion blender is the best for smoothies. I have the cuisinart blending/chopping blender and it is great. The travel mug is the blender cup.
