Class snack
I know we have discussed healthy snacks to pack for our individual children, but does anyone else have to supply for the whole class? In our district they ask you to send in a large snack (goldfish, crackers, cookies) at the beginning of each month. It was the same last year in kindergarten as well. Now we don't eat perfectly around here, but I have been trying to make better food choices. I don't mind DS having crackers or cookies as a snack, but I would like him to have a healthier snack sometimes too. Do you think it would be ok to send a note to the teacher asking if instead of sending in a snack monthly I bring a healthy snack one day a month? I was thinking maybe different fruits, muffins, or cut up cheese and Triscuits? Would they be ok with something prepared at home?

Re: Class snack
They may want something store bought because of allergies. It can't hurt to ask though. We have class snack for preschool. They allow fruit and muffins from home, cupcakes for birthday, etc...

Re: Class snack
Ugh, this is my first year dealing with class snack at my son's preschool and I want to scream. I walked in the other day to find out that he had Doritos for the afternoon and cookies in the morning. I am so annoyed that my son is being given absolute shit to eat twice a day when he never eats it at home. Ever. At a party, sure, but at school? I'm so upset. I'm considering telling them that I will continue to supply a class snack for the month, but will be sending him snacks for himself everyday.

Re: Class snack
I'm just thinking that I would rather even send 1-2 big bags of grapes once a week. At least I know that one day they're not eating crap. And that won't break the budget either. Healthy snacks for 20+ kids can get expensive. That's probably another reason they get cookies and chips- they're a lot cheaper then healthier options.

Re: Class snack
Luckily, we don't have class snacks but what a ridiculous idea!!! Why can't everyone bring their own snacks?? I would certianly be very pissed off if I saw my child eating the crap you describe you saw him eat!
Sorry!

Re: Class snack
I have a feeling in my district that half the class may not be sent in with snack if it was done individually. And I'm sure out of the 20 or so kids in class, maybe half send in the monthly snack.
