Meet the teacher night ideas?

I start out by giving them a brochure with an overview of the course, the assessments, my website (lists calendar of assignments), dates report cards are released, and my e-mail address.

It's a tri-fold and the last third is a questionnaire. Because it's a high school we go through a mini-version of the kids' schedule. Years ago, parents who arrived early would ask me questions that I was about to cover or would want an individual parent conference (my admins feel it is not appropriate for that night as other parents are in the room). I find the questions keep them busy. The questions refer to their concerns about the course, Regents exams, etc,)

Then I start with a ppt presentation. Info about my professional experience since teaching, grading criteria, recent changes made by NYS- Common Core and all it emphasizes, contact information, etc.

I know I teach an entirely different level/subject but hopefully some of that helps.

It's also a good idea to have some student work on display.

I already have their work up! That was my first order of business!

I make magnets with my contact info on it...they are just Ellison die cutouts that I laminate and put a magnet on. I like to have them write a letter to their adult...we then have a super kid paper that someone (either the person who comes or myself) fills out for them to read.

When I was a classroom teacher, I used to have the kids make a video explaining everything. (I would send home a permission slip before taping) I would also make a back to school raffle basket (markers, pencils, folders, a book, other goodies) and have the parents fill out a raffle for their child. I would then raffle off the basket at the end of open house.
