Splenda and stomach issues
I think, but I'm not sure, that Splenda has been causing major stomach issues for me.
I've cut it out of my diet as of this morning so we'll see, but I was curious if anyone else experienced it? It seems to be a semi-common issue according to Google
I have no issues with the idea of artificial sweeteners, but now I'm afraid to try anything, I had the worst stomach pains last night and I was convinced it was the start of a stomach virus, thank god it wasn't.

Re: Splenda and stomach issues
Artificial sweeteners don't bother me, but I know many people who do get stomach issues from them. DH can't do artificial sweeteners at all - he hates the taste and they really upset his stomach!
I think I built up an immunity because my mom was such a fan of diet coke . It's awful, in high school I would have like 4-5 diet cokes a day! Now I don't do soda at all, but I use Splenda or some such thing in coffee and I drink crystal lite which also uses artificial sweeteners and I'm fine. But my MIL totally avoids all the artificial stuff. She swears by Truvia - have you tried that?

Re: Splenda and stomach issues
I used to drink 5 to 6 cups of green tea at work, with 4 splendas in each cup. In addition to the 10 splenda I had in coffee too. Yes, I was ingesting 30+ packets of splenda a day.
I definitely had issues. But also because my work lunches have vegetables in them that are known to cause stomach upset as well.
I cut down to 2 cups of tea per day and still have issues on salad/vegetable days but it's not as bad.

I have had issues with sorbitol even if I have only 1 serving...so yes i think it could be from the splenda!

Re: Splenda and stomach issues
yes i think so-i put one in my greek yogurt every morning..i used to put 2 or 3 but could tell it was doing a number on my stomach. cutting back has helped but even so i sometimes have the same issue when i have the splenda and then like a diet snapple too, i HAVE to cut back on this stuff but am finding it hard to. i read somewhere that Splenda can interfere with the good bacteria in your intestine...not sure if that's true but i think i've heard that!

Re: Splenda and stomach issues
I've read in many places that it's actually so much better for your body to just put sugar in something vs. artificial sweetners because our body has difficulty breaking them down.
I have heard they can lead to weight gain as well (?).

Re: Splenda and stomach issues
My husband cannot use any of the articifical sweeteners. It's baaad with his stomach. He is diabetic. He has gotten used to not using any sweeteners at all. He drinks unsweetened Iced Tea and he only eats sweets when he has low blood sugar.
Too often, people get him bakery goods made with artificial sweeteners, thinking it's a nice gesture for a diabetic. He can't eat them.

Re: Splenda and stomach issues
Shockingly EVERYTHING bothers my stomach but Splenda has not. But yes, I have heard of that. Have you tried Truvia or another one of the Stevia sweetners? They aren't considered artificial as they are from a plant.

I bake with liquid agave- it's the only sweeter that doesn't mess with my blood sugar
I always had stomach issues when I drank crystal light- now I just aviod sugar - real and fake

Re: Splenda and stomach issues
LB - I also can not use Splenda (only when in a real pinch!)
But I use Truvia in my coffee and have no issues at all.
For other things I need to sweeten, I use Agave

Re: Splenda and stomach issues
Thanks everyone! I am really hesitant to use Truvia or Stevia because I've heard bad things about the aftertaste.

I need to try Agave again. I used it before and didn't like how I could really "taste" it, if that makes sense - I only wanted the sweetness not the flavor - but if I use less than a tbsp maybe I won't have that problem.

Splenda and stomach issues
I haven't had any issues with aftertaste with Truvia, in fact I find it tastes more like real sugar. The Agave I use in recipes to replace sugar, I find it gives a similar flavor. I don't put it in my coffee.
I made Skinnytaste applesauce last week and used the Agave in place of the brown sugar and you would never know the difference.

Re: Splenda and stomach issues
One of my friends has issues with Splenda. I don't, but I only use rarely when I can't have my usual vanilla coconut milk in my coffee, lol.
I recently used Agave in a salad dressing recipe that called for real sugar, and I wasn't crazy about it. I didn't really pay attention to the replacement ratio though - I was lazy so I just guesstimated. Next time I will be more accurate when using it as a replacement. Glad to hear you ladies have had success with it.
