Tonsil stones or Tonsillolith?

I've discovered that I have these. Does anyone else have them? And how do I get rid of them? Apparently there is no cure apart from having my tonsils removed.

Tonsil stones or Tonsillolith?

Wow! I have NEVER met anyone else who has had this! People look at me like I'm insane when I say I had these. I had them from ages 16-18 and my tonsils were just severly diseased. At 18 I had them removed and my ENT said they were some of the worst tonsils he's seen. When I would get a lot of the stones I'd gargle with salt water or a mouth wash like an antiseptic in it. Good luck!

They are disgusting! And Yes I get them. I think everyone gets them, only not many realize. And not everyone has them all the time.

Growing up, we always called them "White things"

When I met DH, he had one come flying out of his mouth one time, he said oh no it's a smelly ball. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Everyone has their own term. A lot of people (GAG) swallow them without realizing.

I was told tonsils out is the only way to be rid of them forever. Gargling helps and I know this is gonna sound very weird, but I pick at my tonsils with q-tips on a weekly bases to be sure there aren't any hiding in there that will pop out at a bad time.

They are so friggin gross.

I get these from time to time! They're sooo annoying because you get the feeling like food is stuck in your throat!! I usually hold a flashlight with one hand and poke at it with the other Chat Icon

The way it was explained to me was everyone's tonsils are shaped differently. If you are really prone to these, your tonsils are probably shaped like swiss cheese with little indentations where food could easily get stuck.

Look online for home remedies... as someone said, gargling is a good idea. You could always poke them like I do Chat Icon just be careful. It's honestly not the best idea lol

eta: here's a post I made about this exact topic over two years ago.

Feel better!! These things are harmless, just a little detrimental to your sanity Chat IconI hate the feeling like something is stuck back there, ugh!

Nasty and smelly things. Can't stand when I get them.
I read about the gargling, and also not to eat late at night becuase food particles take a while to get down the throat, which can lead to increased tonsil stones.
I don't drink a lot of fluids, am going to try to drink more to see if that helps.

Tonsil stones or Tonsillolith?

I have them and I spoke to my doctor about it. she said basically there is nothing I can do about it. I just have more cavernous pockets. I will poke them with q-tips soaked in peroxide. Then they will pop out. i check daily for these things. I think so many people have them and don't know about it.
