Anyone ever have tonsil stones? (x-post)

I left this on the health board for a few days with no luck (please don't remove!)

Re: Anyone ever have tonsil stones? (x-post)

Yes actually, I use to have them pretty bad when I was younger. I don't seem to suffer with them as bad now. The main cause of tonsil stones is post nasal drip, so using a nasal spray will help break that up and will help with the mucus and help it from getting stuck there. Apparently there is a website called therabreath.com that sells some sort of mouthwash and spray to help, but I don't have any experience with those.

Yes, I did about a year or two ago. I had chronic tonsillitis and was getting awful infections. They were gross and my attempts at getting them out myself were ... shall we say ... less than successful.

Mine did not need to be removed and eventually dislodged themselves.

I was not a happy camper.

Re: Anyone ever have tonsil stones? (x-post)

I had to google what tonsil stones were, but now that I've looked them up, I have definitely had them.

I remember there was a time when I was dealing with them a lot. Now, I will get one from time to time, but not that much.

I know I have one when it feels like there is something stuck in the back of my throat. I never even thought to go see a doctor about them because they never hurt and eventually would come out on their own.

I always thought it was just food that got stuck back there because I have unusually large tonsils. Now I see that it has a name!

Not sure what else you can do about them. Chat Icon

ahhh yup... Tonsillolith! boy can they smell bad... LOL

i have a chronic cough from a post nasal drip that has been plaguing me since i was very little.... nothing seems to help it except a z-pack and you cant keep that going...

it feels like you have something caught in your throat.... it eventually unsticks itself and comes out... ew gross!

They will only form in people who still have their tonsils; however, that does not mean that you should run out and get your tonsils removed! Not too long ago, they were routinely removed for being swollen and inflamed. What was not understood then was that the tonsils' sole purpose is to prevent organisms and bacteria from traveling deeper in the throat.

ive found that either a saline nasal spray or using a netti pot helps a great deal...

another cronic tonsilitis sufferer, but my ENT said that I will hate them if I get them out as an adult (I get about 5-6 times a year) - what was your experience like. They also said i would lose 10 pounds in a week (which I thought that as positive! Chat Icon )

Ugh, yeah - I get them and they are really gross. I make it a part of my evening ritual to check for them and remove them if necessary.

Yes so gross. If having my tonsils out wasn't such a risk I'd do it in a second. I've been using Therabreath's tonsillith kit.
