i love my district!
Received an email from our superintendent saying we Are open monday.... But Realizes many teachers are Suffering As well And,wants us only to come in if we do not have to wait in line for hours for gas and/or if Our own home is damaged and we need time to deal with contractors, insurance, etc. Also we can Bring our own kids to school on monday if our own schools or daycares are closed. What a beautiful feeling to be a part of such a great community.

I felt the exact same way when I got the e-mail. As my mother said -- he is such a mensch. (If she pulled out the Yiddish, you know she was impressed.) I feel so lucky to work there -- always have.

Wow. What district is this? I work in one that was pretty devastated by the hurricane and have not seen any compassion like this from mine.

a small north shore district in Nassau. Not hit particularly hard like the communities on the water, but people do have damage like everywhere else because of trees. they care more about the employees' safety - many of us suffered significant damage. he even said it was going to be more of a day for everyone to come together and to give the kids a warm place to come to with power. families can come in when they want and leave when they want (provided there are people to drop them off and pick up). buses are running for now.

and this is why i feel guilty that i might not be able to come in tomorrow. I WANT to come in and cover for teachers who really are suffering right now. (I know of 2 people in my building that had a lot of damage) My dad's chemotherapy got delayed last week because of the storm and so my mom will be taking him tomorrow, so she can't watch my kids. I was going to bring my 3 y.o. but the 16 month old, would not last the whole day there. My daycare is closed and I only have a quarter tank of gas. sigh..... i want to help, but not sure how i can make it happen.

Oh, please don't feel bad. You have so much going on at home. You can only do what you can, and you know you'll do whatever you can when it IS feasible for you to come in. We have good people in our district who a) understand and b) will do whatever is in their power to help the people who need it. (I am looking forward to/dreading going in tomorrow... we have so many teachers who live in Long Beach, Oceanside, etc... I am so sad at the thought of what might've happened to their homes...)
