How would you feel about this
Cailen told me tonight that yesterday, a girl from his class kicked his face on the playground and a lens popped out if his glasses.
The scenario was she was blocking the slide, and Cai wanted to go through. He was crawling trying to get past her legs and she kicked him.
This isn't the first time she has been aggressive with him and other kids. I never said anything about it because they are kindergarteners and when it's on the playground they aren't too well supervised I am sure, and kids are kids....
But this really bothered me. First of all, his glasses are so specialized that these glasses are insanely expensive. I need to know if they get damaged in any way because they need to be in his frames specifically. No one told me they had to snap the lens back in.
Also, he had to have been kicked pretty significantly for that to happen! If he didn't have on glasses, that could have caused a black eye, and if it was on his nose she could have broken his nose!
I emailed the teacher (she welcomes emails). I know she has no control over that playground but I need to know what's going on when things like this happen!
Also, if the glasses are damaged, or of she damages them in the future.... Is it completely awful to ask the family to replace them? If Cailen damaged something that his classmate needed to function because of aggressive behavior, I would feel responsible for replacing it.

Re: How would you feel about this
If my kid broke someone's glasses, I'd want to pay any out of pocket expenses. I'd be pissed about it but not at the parent or the kid, I'd be pissed at my kid.
But let's say your kid brought an iPhone to school, passed it around & my kid accidentally dropped it. I'd say that's on your kid, not mine.
This was intentional & that makes all of the difference in the world.

I would absolutely say something. Something similar happened to my nephew. Kid hit him and his glasses flew off his face and broke. My sister said something to the teacher who told the parents and they paid for a replacement.
I would also make sure the teacher addresses this little girls parents. DD also in K had an incident with a little boy in her class and the teacher addressed his parents. As a parent I would want to know.

Re: How would you feel about this
From the stories my son gives I wonder if some of these teachers/aides bother watching these kids during recess. I would want whatever out of pocket expense from her parents.

How would you feel about this
When I taught 1st grade, I always called parents about incidents like that. you should inform the teacher that you would like to be contacted about it in the future and you would also like the teacher to contact the girls parents as well.

I would let the assistant principal (or the disciplinary in the school) know. I would point out the expense of the glasses. Let it all be on record.

Re: How would you feel about this
This is why I have my 2nd grader leave his glasses on his desk during recess and gym. Asking the other parents to replace the glasses is unreasonable IMO. Is your sons word against their child's.

Re: How would you feel about this
His teacher called me. She's awesome. It's more than his word against hers. It was witnessed by the teacher outside. The glasses seem to be ok. His teacher said they are addressing things with this little girl. Thanks!

Good, I'm glad his teacher seems to be on top of things.
